Itinerary

Description

Experience Norway at a time of the year when the dramatic landscapes of this incredible part of the world are at their frozen finest, the country’s enchanting towns, villages and cities really come to life, and you have the best chance to see one of Mother Nature’s most spellbinding phenomena on this wonderful winter escape – the Northern Lights.

Cruise Itinerary

Day 1 – Home pickup, pre-cruise lunch & embarkation in Southampton / Days 2 & 3 – At Sea

A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home for your comfortable journey in a top specification car so you can begin your holiday in style. On arrival at the Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton, we enjoy an exclusive pre-cruise lunch and a fascinating talk on the Northern Lights with astronomer, award-winning astrophotographer and BBC Sky at Night presenter Pete Lawrence. Afterwards we are transferred to Southampton Port where we board the Black Watch and begin our journey, taking time to relax in our cabins or on deck and enjoying the use of the ship’s range of leisure facilities.

Day 4 – Ålesund, Norway

We moor up in Ålesund, Norway’s popular, art-nouveau epic of towers and turrets, ornaments and balconies, steeples and spires. The city’s delightful pedestrianised streets offer a diverse mix of art galleries, shops and lively cafés and lead to the 418 steps that climb Mount Aksla. The Fjellstua restaurant and café at the summit is the perfect place to sit and soak up panoramic views of this attractive city, the archipelago, and the Sunnmore Alps. Ålesund is the gateway to the iconic northwestern fjords and this seaport is the home base for Norway's largest cod-fishing fleet which unsurprisingly provides the city's visitors with some superb seafood to try.

Day 5 – Trondheim, Norway

Founded over a thousand years ago by Viking King Olav Trygvasson, Trondheim was Norway’s first capital city and this is our port of call today. Its colourful warehouses, charming waterways and wooded hills make Trondheim one of Norway's most photogenic towns. Sat on the impressive Trondheim Fjord, the city is packed with interesting sights which are easy to navigate on foot, as most of the attractions are located on a small island accessible via a series of walkable bridges.

The pride of Trondheim is Nidarosdomen, the world’s northernmost medieval cathedral. The majestic church towers above the city centre and is erected on the site of St Olav’s grave where medieval pilgrims flocked to worship. Trondheim’s wide streets and semi-pedestrianised heart has some great cafés and restaurants on show, while Kristiansten Fortress, located on high to the east of the centre, is one of the most popular recreational areas.

Day 6 – At Sea / Days 7 & 8 – Tromsø, Norway

After a day at leisure on the ship we cruise into the island city of Tromsø, one of northern Norway’s true delights. Rich with neo-classical architecture, the city known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, contains the largest number of wooden houses in northern Norway, and its old world charm makes it a real joy to explore. A major cultural hub above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is famed as a viewing point for the colourful Northern Lights that often light up the night sky and hopefully we will be able to admire this spectacular sight during our time here.

The city’s most recognisable landmark is the must-visit Arctic Cathedral. Built in 1965, the cathedral’s distinctive iceberg-shaped design was inspired by the landscapes of northern Norway and features a beautiful glass mosaic. Tromsø, and the stunning landscapes that surround it, are best viewed from the top of the Storsteinen Mountain though, which stands 420 metres above sea level. Accessible via cable car, the peak is easy to reach and one of the most popular spots on the edge of the city.

Days 9 & 10 – Alta, Norway

As one of the best places on earth to witness the Northern Lights in winter, Alta is a truly magical destination and we enjoy two days here. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Sami people, the area has a fascinating cultural history. Rock carvings in nearby Hjemmeluft are believed to date from around 4,200 to 500 BC. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the carvings on display in the Alta Museum are evidence of the existence of human activity in the far north during prehistoric times. Alta needed rebuilding after WWII, so the buildings of this northern Norwegian port are relatively new; notable architecture includes the Northern Lights Cathedral. A particular highlight in Alta though is the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel – everything inside and outside the hotel is made of ice, and is open to visitors from January until it melts away in spring. The head of the Altafjord, where the Altaelva runs through the town, is said to have the best salmon fishing in the world too. It’s still possible to see the fish leaping up the river, despite the construction of the 100m Altadammen in the 1970s.

Day 11 – At Sea / Day 12 – Kristiansund, Norway

After a day at leisure on the ship, we moor up in Kristiansund, our final port of call. Reaching out into the waters of Norway’s Western Cape on four, bridge-connected islands, the clean, open, operatic city of Kristiansund, and its stunning harbour, are impossible to ignore. Destroyed in the Second World War, nearly 80% of Kristiansund has been rebuilt since the 1940s. The city is now home to some of Norway’s most iconic modern architecture. Reminders of pre-war Kristiansund still remain, notably the city’s opera house – the oldest in Norway – which offers around 100 opera performances, an opera festival and an outdoor performance of Donna Bacalao every year.

Days 13 & 14 – At Sea / Day 15 – Disembarkation in Southampton

After a couple of days at leisure on the ship, we arrive back in Southampton where we disembark and are met by our chauffeur for the journey home – a luxurious and stress-free way to end the holiday.
