Itinerary

Description

North Devon is known for its golden, sandy beaches and stunning coastline. Classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we visit picturesque Lynmouth, the medieval village of Dunster and of course the stunning Exmoor National Park. On this short break to remember, we explore this lovely region and its striking scenery by land and by sea.

Itinerary

Included Excursions
Ilfracombe & Exmoor Cliffs and Waterfalls Cruise (full day)
We head for Ilfracombe, a popular holiday town during the Victorian era and home to stunning beaches and the largest harbour on the north Devon coast. We embark on the Ilfracombe Princess to explore some of the most dramatic coastlines and highest cliffs in England. On our 90 minute cruise, we take in the impressive headlands of the Exmoor National Park, Great Hangman cliffs just outside Combe Martin which stand at a huge 1043ft, plus the famous Silver mines and Watermouth Castle. We may even be lucky enough to see harbour porpoises and grey seals before we head back to Ilfracombe for some time at leisure.

Exmoor National Park, Lynmouth & Dunster (full day)
This excursion takes us on a journey through the stunning Exmoor National Park, where we pass almost other-worldly landscapes of tawny grasses, sheer rock-strewn river valleys and black cliffs which reach out towards the sea. First we reach bustling Lynmouth with its lively harbour, lined with quaint pubs and souvenir shops. Take a stroll to enjoy the scenic coastal views – a landscape-painter’s dream! We then continue through the National Park to the medieval village of Dunster, one of Exmoor’s oldest villages with its famously photogenic russet-red castle. We have time to wander the tangle of cobbled streets, taking in the delightful packhorse bridges and the old yarn market.

Hartland Abbey & Gardens (half day)
We make our way to Hartland Abbey, a stately home in a stunning setting on the north-west Devon coast. Built in the 12th century, the abbey survived as a monastery longer than any other in the country. In the 1530, Henry VIII gifted the abbey to the Keeper of his Wine Cellar and the house still remains in the family – what a gift! We explore the fascinating interiors of the house, which span Medieval, Queen Anne, Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods, before a wander around the beautiful woodland, walled gardens and parkland, complete with wild flowers, peacocks and donkeys. After exploring this popular film location – think Sense and Sensibility and The Night Manager – there is time for a well-deserved rest at the award-winning Old Kitchens Tea Room.

JG3

Hotels with a JG3 rating tend to be a more formal style of hotel, often part of a hotel chain, with a greater range of facilities and services. Bedrooms are a little more spacious and have additional features. Public areas are larger and include lounge seating, a bar and restaurant with good quality food served either buffet style or with waiter service.
