Itinerary

Description

We discover some of the gems in the South West on this brand new tour. From impressive Lacock Abbey to the quirky house of Tyntesfield and the tranquil Courts Garden, we uncover the history of the West Country through a selection of fine properties and gardens. We also step aboard the pioneering ship SS Great Britain on a fully interactive tour of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s masterpiece.

Coach Itinerary

Excursion One - Lacock Abbey & Malmesbury
Lacock Abbey sits at the heart of the picturesque village of Lacock with golden stone cloisters and a Great Hall. Once a medieval nunnery, the abbey was turned into a Tudor family home. The last owner was William Henry Fox Talbot, who invented the first photographic negative.

We then head to Malmesbury, England’s oldest borough, with a history spanning over a thousand years, where we spend some free time. Encircled by the River Avon, this hilltop town with its charming medieval streets, old courtroom and almshouses is a lovely place to explore. You may choose to visit the historic abbey or the nearby Abbey House Gardens, with their mix of formal landscaping and wild spaces (there is a charge for entrance to the gardens).

Excursion Two - Tyntesfield & SS Great Britain
We visit Tyntesfield, once a much loved family home. This eccentric house is a fabulous Gothic Revival confection of turrets and ornate stonework. Its construction was financed by less romantic means, however – the Gibbs family business of importing guano from South America.

Next, we head into Bristol and travel back in time with a visit to SS Great Britain, the great-great grandmother for all modern ships. Created in 1843 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the ship has been painstakingly restored and we get under the skin of life at sea as we head beneath the glass sea, walk the SS Great Britain's history in the Dockyard Museum and step onto the ship itself on our guided tour.

Excursion Three - Avebury Manor and Stone Circle & The Courts Garden
We head to the pretty village of Avebury where we discover the world-famous stone circle, one of the most important megalithic monuments in Europe, set in the beautiful Wiltshire landscape. We also visit the 16th-century Avebury Manor where rooms have been recreated in five different styles; from Tudor to the 20th century, reflecting the lives of the people who once lived there.

We continue on to TheCourts Garden, owned by the National Trust since 1943 and a quintessentially English country garden superbly planted and maintained with seven acres of colourful plants, herbaceous borders, peaceful water gardens and an arboretum.
