Itinerary

Description

As you gaze from the rail of Columbus you’ll be stunned by the sheer scale and magnificence of Norway’s mighty fjords. This cruise will introduce you to breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls, sheer grey cliffs and majestic mountains. In contrast you will be able to visit pretty fjord villages set among green fields and Bergen, the fjord capital, with its busy harbour and historic Hanseatic buildings.

Cruise

Day 1 – Embarkation in London Tilbury

After joining the coach, we travel to London Tilbury and board the Columbus. We then begin our journey, taking time to relax in our cabins or on deck and enjoying the use of the ship’s range of leisure facilities.

Day 2 – Amsterdam, Netherlands

We cruise to the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. With more bicycles than permanent residents, the city is both charming and quirky. Aesthetically, little has changed in the centre since its 17th century Golden Age. Beautiful gabled houses and merchants’ mansions line serene, tree-lined canals which are crossed by numerous bridges. The Royal Palace, originally built as a Town Hall in the 17th century, stands on a large square in the centre of the city. Considered one of Europe’s major art capitals, Amsterdam is home to a number of superb galleries and museums including the famous Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum.

Day 3 – At Sea / Day 4 – Eidfjord & Cruising Hardangerfjord

After a day at leisure on the ship, we arrive in Eidfjord, lying at the end of a tributary of the beautiful Hardangerfjord and surrounded by mountains up to 1,900 metres high. The small town is the gateway to Hardangervidda, the largest high mountain plateau in Europe and Norway’s largest national park. A short walk from the village centre there are graves by the roadside dating back to the Iron Age and Viking eras. The ‘old’ church in Eidfjord was built in 1309. Nearby, the stunning Vøringfossen waterfall is one of Norway’s most popular natural attractions and features in optional excursions along with the amazing Sysen Dam. Later, we cruise along the Hardangerfjord, the fourth longest fjord in the world. With steep mountain slopes meeting the water’s shores, we take in the impressive vistas.

Day 5 – Flåm & Cruising Sognefjord

This morning we arrive in Flåm. Surrounded by towering mountains, this tiny village, with some 500 inhabitants, nestles at the head of Aurlandsfjord, the innermost arm of the mighty Sognefjord. Its popularity as a tourist destination began in the late 19th century with the arrival of steamships carrying English and German passengers including Europe’s royals attracted by the salmon fishing in the Flåm River. Today’s visitors are drawn to Flåm for a chance to ride on one of the world’s steepest and most spectacular railways. A masterpiece of engineering, Flåm Railway twists and turns through the steep-sided Flåm Valley amidst some of Norway’s most breathtaking mountain scenery. Afterwards, we cruise along the beautiful Sognefjord, the largest fjord in Norway.

Day 6 – Bergen

Our final destination is Bergen, known as the ‘Gateway to the Fjords’. It is Norway’s second largest city yet, with a population of less than a quarter of a million, it has the feel of a small town. The city is beautifully sited against a backdrop of seven mountains and the funicular ride to the summit of Mount Fløien affords wonderful panoramic views of Bergen and Norway’s attractive coastline. Overlooking the harbour the colourful Bryggen wharf is the face of Bergen. The characteristic wooden gabled buildings were once the home and offices of Hanseatic merchants but today house shops selling crafts and traditional souvenirs.

Day 7 – At Sea / Day 8 – Disembarkation in London Tilbury

After a day at leisure on the ship, we arrive back in London Tilbury the following morning where we disembark and join the coach for our journey home.
