With its glorious seafaring history, rejuvenated waterfront, bustling centre and unrivalled musical heritage, Liverpool is a fantastic choice for a city break. We enjoy this fabulous metropolis from different perspectives as we take to the water for a ferry ‘cross the Mersey and head underground to the Western Approaches Museum. As the epicentre of the Battle of the Atlantic and once only accessed by signing the Official Secrets Act, this labyrinth of offices and rooms offers a captivating journey back in time. Discover where Commanders, WRNs and WAAF personnel worked in the Operation Room and learn about their stories, kept alive in this fascinating museum beneath the streets of Liverpool.

Coach Itinerary

Included Excursions

Ferry across the Mersey, the Western Approaches Museum& Liverpool (full day)

This morning we board the ferry ‘cross the Mersey, a 60-minute round trip which gives us the chance to take in the sights and panoramas along the River Mersey, from Liverpool’s skyline to the beautiful shorelines of the Wirral on the opposite bank.

Our next stop is the Western Approaches Museum (if we can find the top-secret bunker, still well-hidden underground)! As a wartime HQ, this is where the tactics of British Armed Forces were protected and Nazi convoys were monitored. There is so much to explore, including the documents and tools used to pin-point enemy locations and one of only two surviving wartime phones, which had a direct line to the Cabinet War Rooms. Some of the rooms are frozen in time, including the Operation Room, which has remained as it was left on 15 August 1945 when the doors finally closed.

Afterwards, we enjoy some free time in Liverpool. From the impressive Liver Building to the renovated Albert Dock, there are plenty of iconic sights to tick off and stories to discover around every corner. Fans of the Beatles can explore some of the locations frequented by the famous band such as the Cavern Club. Cilla Black also performed here while she was a cloakroom attendant and in 2017, a bronze statue of the late singer was unveiled outside the club in her honour.

Chester (full day)

We head to the delightful city of Chester, where the fascinating sights span the centuries. Wander through the streets of black and white timber-framed buildings and double-height shops or visit the remains of the city’s Roman Amphitheatre. As well as an abundance of historical attractions Chester also has a thriving shopping centre with a host of cafés, restaurants and pubs to tempt you.

Optional Excursion

Southport & Ormskirk – £13pp (full day)

On our optional excursion wefirsthead to the traditional Victorian seaside town of Southport. Known as England’s Classic Resort, it is home to the country’s second longest and oldest pier, and has miles of golden sand and beautiful parks and gardens perfect for a relaxing stroll. We continue on to the historic market town of Ormskirk in West Lancashire, where there’s plenty of shopping opportunities with a fabulous mix of high-street favourites and independent boutiques, plus a range of lovely restaurants and cafés. Other highlights include Ormskirk’s Chapel Gallery, the Grade II-listed Clock Tower and the 12th-century Ormskirk Parish Church, one of just three churches in the country to have both a steeple and a spire.
