Itinerary

Description

The south-west of Ireland, with its mountains, lakes and dramatic Atlantic coastline, is among the most scenic areas in the country. We explore these breathtaking landscapes from different perspectives as we embark on nostalgic heritage rail journeys and relaxing boat cruises; the perfect way to discover this area of outstanding natural beauty.

Coach Itinerary

Day 1
We catch the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin where our tour manager joins us. We continue onwards to our hotel in Limerick where we stay for the next four nights.

Day 2 - Lartigue Monorail, Lartigue Museum & Ballybunion
We head to the picturesque market town of Listowel where we enjoy a short journey on a full scale, diesel powered replica of the original Lartigue Monorail, experiencing the unique features of the monorail and observing the ingenious switching system. We also visit the Lartigue Museum to see models, displays and memorabilia relating to the Lartigue and mainline railways.

We then spend some time in the charming seaside resort of Ballybunion. This picturesque town boasts long stretches of sandy beaches and plenty of pubs and cafés, as well as a statue of Bill Clinton who visited the town on a golfing trip.

Day 3 - Limerick, River Shannon Cruise & West Clare Railway
We start the day with some free time in Limerick. Set on the River Shannon, the city is overlooked by the 13th-century King John’s Castle and is also home to St John's Cathedral which boasts the tallest spire in Ireland. From here, we embark on a relaxing cruise along the River Shannon, enjoying the beautiful scenery from the comfort of our boat.

Afterwards, we take a nostalgic train journey on the heritage West Clare Railway. Forever associated with the popular entertainer Percy French, the railway provides a snapshot of Ireland’s rural narrow-gauge travel in the first half of the 20th century.

Day 4 - Killarney including Lakes Cruise
This morning, we head to the pretty town of Killarney, famed for its jaunting cars (horse-drawn carts) operated by the local jarvies that take visitors on guided tours of the town (not included).

After free time to explore the town at leisure, we embark on a lakescruise; time to sit back, relax and enjoy the picturesque scenery of Killarney’s beautiful lakes and mountains, located in Killarney National Park.

Day 5 - Dublin
Checking out of our hotel, we travel to Dublin where we spend an afternoon at leisure. Once Europe’s fifth largest city with a history that stretches back over a thousand years, Dublin is now one of the most vibrant cities in the world with numerous friendly pubs serving up the perfect pint of Guinness. We also have the option to join a locally guided tour of the city (£10pp) before spending the night in our hotel in the Dublin area.

Day 6
After an early breakfast, we catch the morning ferry back to Holyhead and continue our journey home.

Due to ferry times, coach pickup times may be very early in the morning. On the last morning in Ireland, breakfast may be a packed takeaway breakfast due to early sailing schedules.
