Day One - Arrival in Jersey
We fly to Jersey and transfer to our hotel on the island where we stay for the next three nights.
Day Two - Jersey Island Highlights Tour, Hamptonne Country Life Museum & St Helier
We enjoy a half day Island Highlights Tour which includes a visit to the Hamptonne Country Life Museum. Here we find a collection of farm buildings and meadows that takes us through nearly 300 years of Jersey’s rural history, which we discover on our guided tour. Enjoy a stroll through the kitchen garden and witness demonstrations of craft and skill from days gone by.
The afternoon is left free to explore the thriving capital of St Helier at leisure. Considered as the gateway to the Channel Islands, this lovely port town offers VAT-free shopping, a picturesque Royal Square, Victorian Central Market and an old town of narrow pedestrianised streets.
Day Three - Le Moulin de Quétivel & Elizabeth Castle
Set in beautiful woodland surroundings, Le Moulin de Quétivel is the only working watermill in Jersey and provides a unique insight into the island’s industry during the 18th century. The history of the mill can be traced back to 1309 although the current building dates from the 18th century with restoration carried out in the 1970s.
We then board an amphibious bus and head to Elizabeth Castle, set on a rocky islet in St Aubin’s Bay. The perfect place to explore Jersey’s history, the castle has watched over the island’s main seaway for over 300 years and was a place of refuge for Charles II during the Civil War. The castle is now a museum and is home to several fascinating displays of military memorabilia.
Day Four - 16 New Street, Ferry to Guernsey & La Vallette Military Museum
In the morning we visit 16 New Street, the finest remaining Georgian town house in St Helier, described as ‘a lost jewel in the crown of the architectural heritage of Jersey’. Following renovations carried out by the National Trust for Jersey, the building gives us a wonderful example of the elegant architectural style and fashions of 18th century Jersey while the resident housekeeper provides us with some Georgian treats in the living history kitchen.
Later, we transfer to the harbour for our ferry crossing to Guernsey. On arrival, we head to La Vallette Military Museum housed in a complex of underground tunnels that were built by German forces as a fuel storage facility for their U-Boats. The museum covers Guernsey's military history, including World War One and the German Occupation of the island during World War Two, as well as the island's own militia, and features fascinating exhibitions plus an impressive collection of military and occupation memorabilia.
Afterwards, we check in to our Guernsey hotel, where we stay for three nights.
Day Five - Sausmarez Manor & St Peter Port
We head to Sausmarez Manor. Parts of the manor date back to the 13th century, although many alterations in different styles have been made since. The impressive front of the manor is regarded as the finest example of Queen Anne Colonial architecture in Britain while inside are collections of Oriental, French and English furniture and paintings. The manor’s inhabitants, the Sausmarez family, have pursued a variety of careers ranging from explorers to diplomats and admirals to colonial governors, and many have left their mark on the house. Afterwards, we have time to explore the Subtropical Gardens with their many exotic species, set in ancient woodland, and the renowned Sculpture Park.
Afterwards, we spend some time at leisure in Guernsey’s capital of St Peter Port. This pretty harbour town offers a bustling hub of boutiques, restaurants, cobbled streets and attractions around the picturesque harbour, all overlooked by the spectacular Castle Cornet which has stood guard over the town for nearly eight centuries.
Day Six - Sark & La Seigneurie Gardens
We transfer to the harbour and catch the morning ferry to Sark. Just two square miles in size, this car-free island is the smallest of the four main Channel Islands and boasts some spectacular scenery. We enjoy a horse and carriage ride to La Seigneurie Gardens. Set between flower-strewn granite walls, mature woodland and the towers and crenellations of a 17th-century manor, these are some of the finest formal gardens on the Channel Islands. Highlights include the walled garden which shelters many tender and half-hardy plants, the formal rose garden edged with box hedging, the Victorian glasshouse with long-established vines, a vegetable garden, sensory and wild flower gardens.
After our visit, we catch the return ferry to Guernsey.
Day Seven - Departure
We check out of our hotel and transfer to Guernsey airport for our return flight home.
