Itinerary

Description

Discover the breathtakingly beautiful Isle of Skye and the Scottish Highlands, home to some of the most dramatic landscapes in Britain. From craggy mountains and rugged coastlines to windswept lochs, we traverse the wilds of Scotland’s untamed countryside including scenic journeys on some of the most iconic railways in the world.

Air Itinerary

Day 1 - Flight to Glasgow
We fly to Glasgow airport where we are met by our tour manager. We transfer to our overnight hotel where we stay on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2 - Loch Lomond
We make our way to the Isle of Skye, stopping en-route on the beautiful shores of Loch Lomond, the largest expanse of fresh water on mainland Britain with more than 30 islands. The loch is situated amidst one of Scotland’s most idyllic and unspoilt areas in the Trossachs National Park and boasts a stunning mountain backdrop and a great variety of wildlife.

We then cross ‘over the sea to Skye’, via the famous bridge, and check in to our hotel on the island, our base for the next four nights.

Day 3 - Isle of Skye
We enjoy a guided tour of the Isle of Skye. The largest island of the Inner Hebrides is known for its stunning scenery and wild, rugged landscapes including jagged mountains, miles of dramatic coastline, sparkling lochs and isolated moors; perfect for wildlife watching. The island also has a rich and captivating history, from prehistoric sites to medieval castles.

Day 4 - Ferry to Mallaig & West Highland Line
This morning we travel to Armadale to catch the ferry to Mallaig on the mainland. From here we join the Jacobite train on the West Highland Line which takes us across the mountainous west coast of Scotland to Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands. This iconic railway is one of the top rail journeys in the world and takes in such wonderful sights as the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Day 5 - Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness Railway & Loch Ness Visitor Centre
We join the Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness Railway, which featured in Michael Palin’s Great Railway Journeys of the World, which takes us eastwards to the capital of the Highlands. From the perfect vantage point, we enjoy the magnificent landscapes that provide the backdrop for a wonderfully scenic rail journey as we take in many of the area’s shimmering lochs along the way.

En-route back to our hotel, we stop at the Loch Ness Visitor Centre in Drumnadrochit, where a multi-media presentation leads us through 500 million years of history and natural mystery of Loch Ness and the famous Nessie legend.

Day 6 - Pitlochry
We make our way back to the Glasgow area, stopping en-route in Pitlochry. This bustling town enjoys a fabulous location on the River Tummel, set against a backdrop of beautiful woodlands and the mountain of Ben Vrackie.

Later, we check in to our overnight hotel where we stay on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 7 - Flight home
After checking out of the hotel, we transfer to Glasgow airport for our return flights home.

Please note: Train journeys may operate in reverse order subject to final timetables.
