Itinerary

Description

The dramatic landscapes of north Wales, with their spectacular mountains and lush valleys, offer a treasure trove of historic gems to explore. On this fascinating tour, we discover striking Italianate and world-famous gardens, marvel at imposing fortifications that gave protection through times of conflict and hear the 250-year ‘upstairs, downstairs’ story of a family and their servants in a much-loved and extraordinary home.

Itinerary

Excursion One – Chirk Castle & Erddig
The day starts at Chirk Castle, the last of Edward Longshanks’ magnificent fortresses still inhabited today. We start with a guided tour of the award-winning gardens which contain manicured lawns, clipped yews, herbaceous borders, beautiful rose, shrub and rock gardens. Afterwards, we have free time to explore the castle itself with over 700 years of history contained within its walls. The medieval dungeons and tower are relics of more brutal times, while the Long Gallery and State Rooms are sumptuous by comparison with a beautiful and eclectic collection reflecting the tastes of the castle’s many occupants.

Next, we head to Erddig, an atmospheric early 18th-century house that reflects the ‘upstairs, downstairs’ life of a gentry family. We’re provided with a fascinating insight into the lives of the family and their servants on our guided tour. The downstairs rooms are home to a unique collection of servants’ portraits, whilst upstairs there is a wealth of important furniture, textiles and wallpaper. We also have free time to explore the superb walled garden, restored to its former 18th-century formal design with rare fruit trees, herbaceous borders, formal hedges and a national collection of ivies.

Excursion Two – Plas Brondanw Gardens & Portmeirion
We make our way through the stunning Snowdonia National Park to Plas Brondanw Gardens, where we enjoy a guided tour. Plas Brondanwwas given to architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis by his father in 1902 and the gardens are regarded by some as his finest creation. Inspired by the gardens of renaissance Italy, he created a unique landscape with stone walls, ornamented terraces with statuary, topiary and avenues of trees leading the eye to the dramatic mountainous backdrop.

From here, we continue on to Portmeirion, an enchanting Italianate village created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, inspired by his visits to the Mediterranean. Its unique atmosphere has been featured on camera many times, most famously in the iconic 1960s British TV series The Prisoner. We enjoy afternoon tea here before having free time to discover the cluster of historic cottages, iconic architecture, stylish shops and exotic gardens and admire the glorious views.

Excursion Three – Conwy Castle & Bodnant Garden
We head to the medieval walled town of Conwy to visit the imposing Conwy Castle. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this medieval castle was built by Edward I during his conquest of Wales in the late 13th century and is considered to be among the finest surviving medieval fortifications in Britain with soaring curtain walls, round towers and fortified gateways.

Our last visit is to Bodnant Garden, nestled in the Snowdonian foothills. Created over 150 years ago by scientist, businessman and politician Henry Pochin, the garden was filled with plants collected by famous global explorers such as Ernest Wilson, George Forrest and Harold Climber. Today the world-famous garden is home to National Collections and Champion Trees spread across its sweeping lawns, grand terraces and verdant woodland.
