Itinerary

Description

A firm favourite of Queen Victoria in the 19th century who built her holiday home here, the Isle of Wight is a haven of old-fashioned charm. Known as the ‘Garden Isle’, the island is home to enchanting gardens, fine houses and stunning scenery that in turn have inspired poets and artists through history.

Coach Itinerary

Sunday: Arrival

We check in to the Bourne Hall Country House Hotel in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager followed by a three-course evening meal.

Monday: Northwood House, Yarmouth & Godshill

Our day begins at Northwood House. Set in the picturesque Northwood Park in the centre of Cowes, this Grade II listed Georgian manor house was purchased in 1793 by George Ward, a successful London merchant. The House was later rebuilt and extensively decorated by his son. During the Victorian era, the Ward family threw many high society parties here. Queen Victoria’s children even came over from Osborne House along with the rich and famous from all over Great Britain to enjoy these gatherings.

Next we continue to the historic port town of Yarmouth which contains some of the oldest architecture on the island including a 16th-century castle. We’ll enjoy lunch here at the George Hotel.

As we make our way around the island we also spend some time in the pretty inland village of Godshill, with its charming thatched-roofed cottages, delightful medieval church, tearooms and gift shops.

Later we return to our hotel where we enjoy a three-course dinner.

Tuesday: Nunwell House & Osborne House

This morning we visit Nunwell House, a beautiful family home since 1522, set in five acres of tranquil gardens with stunning views across the Solent. The parlour chamber of this historic house is where the ill-fated Charles I spent his last night of freedom. We’ll enjoy a guided tour here.

Afterwards we have the chance to explore Osborne House, purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845 as a seaside retreat away from London and Windsor. The Italianate palace boasts spectacular views across the Solent. On our guided tour we take an intimate glimpse of royal family life as we wander through the magnificent Royal Apartments as well as the walled gardens and grounds where we find the charming Swiss Cottage, used by the royal children to learn household management.

This evening, we enjoy a three-course dinner back at the hotel.

Wednesday: Farringford House and Gardens, Dimbola Lodge & Scenic West Wight Drive

Today begins at Farringford House and Gardens, the home of famous poet and friend of Queen Victoria, Alfred Lord Tennyson. A Grade 1 listed building, Tennyson lived here from 1853 until his death in 1892 and it was here that he wrote some of his most famous works. We’ll find out more about this fascinating property on our guided tour and then have the chance to explore the gardens at leisure.

We then continue on to Dimbola Lodge, home of the celebrated Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. The house is now a Museum and Gallery dedicated to her life and work whilst also showcasing contemporary exhibitions from photographers around the globe.

Later we’ll enjoy a scenic drive taking in the striking multi-coloured cliffs and famous chalky outcrop – The Needles, before we continue down through Mottistone and on to Chale. During our journey we’ll have picturesque countryside on one side in contrast to sheer cliffs and stunning coastal views on the other – a truly spectacular drive.

In the evening we enjoy a three-course dinner and an interesting themed talk from a guest speaker.
