Itinerary

Description

Pack your bags with a desire for adventure and journey with us into the heart of England. From our base at Bosworth Hall Hotel, a 17th-century mansion in the Leicestershire countryside, we embark on our expedition of discovery, visiting the impressive Belvoir Castle, Melton Mowbray, well known for its famous pork pie, Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon with a cruise down the lovely Avon River, and then a ride on the Great Central Railway with free time in Leicester to follow. With a 2 for 1 bar offer thrown in, there’s no turning back on this escapade to the very heart of England!

Itinerary

Belvoir Castle & Melton Mowbray (full day)

We start our day with a visit to Belvoir Castle, ancestral home of the Duke of Rutland and home to the Manners family for the last five hundred years. Pronounced Beaver Castle, this impressive mock castle lies on the site of an historic castle, originally built after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Since then, the castle has been rebuilt at least three times and has made regular appearances on Netflix’s The Crown TV series, standing in for Windsor Castle.

Next, we travel to Melton Mowbray, the quintessential English rural town. Be sure to pick yourself up a pork pie or two at Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe and try it with a chutney while you wander through the town centre and marvel at the many fascinating historic buildings.

Stratford-upon-Avon & Avon River cruise (full day)

Today, we make our way to Stratford to enjoy the passing scenery, plants, and wildlife on the riverbanks of the Avon River on a relacing boat cruise. Afterward, we spend time in Stratford-upon-Avon, the idyllic birthplace of William Shakespeare. There’s plenty to see, with many picturesque, thatched cottages and timbered frame houses throughout town. Walk in the bard’s footsteps and see the Bard’s birthplace or pay your respects at his final resting place at Holy Trinity Church.

Great Central Railway & Leicester (full day)

Today we head to Loughborough where we board our train on the Great Central Railway, the UK’s only mainline heritage railway, and the only place where you can see two steam trains pass one another! We board our locomotive and journey to Leicester, where we disembark to spend some time free time. Did you know that Leicester is home to the burial place of King Richard III and is the base for the National Space Centre?
