Itinerary
Description
Rediscover Yorkshire through Gentleman Jack’s eyes on this fabulous adventure. We follow Anne’s purposeful and fast-paced footsteps across beautiful Yorkshire as we journey to locations of interest from the TV series, including Shibden Hall! Our tour is inspired by the popular period drama, based on the historical writings of Anne Lister, fascinating entrepreneur, and landowner. This is a must-see for any fan of history and the show, with additional visits to Halifax Piece Hall, the Salts Mill at Saltaire and a trip on the heritage Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.
Itinerary
Included Excursions
Halifax Piece Hall & Shibden Hall & Park (full day)
For our first visit we head to Piece Hall in Halifax, the unique 18th-century cloth halls building, which was the focal point for the woven textiles trade industry. This impressive and prestigious building is a sight to behold, and don’t miss the statue of Anne Lister in the courtyard, which was unveiled by the TV series creator Sally Wainwright and lead actress Suranne Jones.
Afterwards, we make our way to Anne Lister’s former home, Shibden Hall. Here we can explore the Hall, recognisable from the TV series, which was partly filmed here. This atmospheric gem is a mile from Halifax town centre, surrounded by beautiful gardens and an impressive estate that forms Shibden Park. There is much to see and remember, at Shibden Hall she had them all…
Salts Mill, Saltaire & Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (full day)
We begin our day visiting Saltaire village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the home of Salts Mill, which was turned into a street scene with a pub and chemist for the Gentleman Jack TV series. Salts Mill was a huge undertaking; at its peak it turned out 18 miles of cloth a day on 1200 looms, and its name stems from the textile magnate, Sit Titus Salt, who opened the mill in 1853.
Next, we travel to Keighley for a delightful journey on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, a unique five-mile branch line in the heart of Yorkshire and made popular by The Railway Children. Sit back and relax while taking in the delightful views on our journey to the quaint little village of Haworth.
Optional Excursion
York & Harrogate – £14pp (full day)
On our optional excursion, we visit the historic city of York where we can roam the narrow, cobbled streets of the ‘Shambles’ where the buildings date back to medieval times. Why not visit the splendid Fairfax Hall, used for interior filming for the Gentleman Jack TV series? Afterwards, we make our way to Harrogate, a lovely town which offers plenty of sightseeing and shopping opportunities amid the elegant streets.
