Flying Scotsman Steam Train & Liverpool

If you have yet to experience the charm of the Flying Scotsman, then now is your chance as the iconic steam locomotive will be running on the heritage East Lancashire Railway once again. Travel behind this magnificent, 1923-built locomotive as we take an unforgettable trip back to the heyday of the golden age of steam. This is a fantastic opportunity to journey through the Irwell Valley in the company of the nation’s favourite steam train, and with a visit to Liverpool also included, this break won’t disappoint!

Day 2Following breakfast at the hotel, we head to Bury, where we board our train behind the magnificent locomotive, the Flying Scotsman, for a picturesque steam-hauled round trip journey on the East Lancashire Railway. With a journey time of approximately 75 minutes, we travel to the charming town of Rawtenstall through beautiful rural panoramas and picture postcard villages, passing over viaducts and through tunnels before arriving back in Bury. We then enjoy free time to explore the town and visit Bury’s award-winning market. Or you may like to browse the independent boutiques, or delve into the industrial heritage of the North West at Bury Transport Museum, home to stunningly restored vehicles and historic artefacts.

Day 3

This morning, we check out of our hotel and travel to Liverpool, where we enjoy time at leisure. Once an industrial powerhouse, Liverpool is thriving again today – with a glorious maritime history, rejuvenated dockside and a bustling city centre. There is plenty to see here, from the iconic Liver Building to the locations frequented by the Beatles, such as the Cavern Club. In the early afternoon, we continue our journey home.

Accommodation

Selected Hotel JG3 | JG4

We’ll stay at a well-appointed hotel (JG3 or JG4 rating). All rooms are en suite and other facilities include a bar and restaurant.

Your hotel will be confirmed approximately 3 weeks before departure, therefore we cannot guarantee that the hotel will have a lift and/or ground floor rooms and may be unsuitable for those with limited mobility.

Hotel Rating

Hotels with a JG3 rating tend to be a more formal style of hotel, often part of a hotel chain, or are very-welcoming family-owned properties. Generally, they offer a greater range of facilities and services, and bedrooms tend to be a little more spacious with additional features. Public areas are larger and include lounge seating, bar and restaurant with good quality food served either buffet style or waiter service.

Accommodation in our JG4 category is of an even higher standard, typically offering a wide range of facilities and services. Bedrooms are designed to make your stay the most comfortable possible and the staff provide a service that reflects the detail and quality. You can also expect higher standards of food and beverages.
