Itinerary

Description

The War of the Roses was one of the most iconic periods in English history. Dividing the country in two, the houses of York and Lancaster played a violent game of pass the parcel with the crown for three decades! On our fascinating getaway we visit some of the greatest towns and cities in the north, with highlights including historic York, the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and a journey on the heritage East Lancashire Railway through the scenic Irwell Valley. This tour of the roses promises to be an intriguing short break.

Included Excursions
The Piece Hall & Royal Armouries Museum (full day)
Our first stop on today’s excursion is The Piece Hall, Halifax. Tucked away within a spellbinding landscape of rippling hills and valleys, this Grade I listed architectural treasure is truly one of Yorkshire’s hidden gems. Being the only survivor of the great 18th-century northern cloth halls, it boasts a rich industrial heritage that embodies the importance of the trade in hand woven textiles or ‘pieces’ of cloth.

We continue on to Leeds to visit the Royal Armouries Museum. The National Museum of Arms and Armour is the UK’s oldest museum, and boasts collections from all around the world. With many themed displays including a war gallery and tournament gallery, there is even a selection of ancient weaponry to help us get up close to the conflict of the War of the Roses.

East Lancashire Railway, Oswaldtwistle Mills & Valleys, Fells and Spells Tour (full day)
This morning we head to the traditional market town of Bury, ready for our nostalgic journey on the heritage East Lancashire Railway. Winding through the picturesque Irwell Valley with its beautiful rural panoramas and picture postcard villages, we pass over viaducts and through tunnels before we reach Rawtenstall.

From here we travel by coach to Oswaldtwistle Mills for some time to explore at leisure. With over 100 retailers, this shopping village is packed full of whimsical gift shops, textile emporiums, quaint tea rooms, cheese delis and Ye Olde Sausage Shop. Treat yourself to something unique or have a wander around before we rejoin the group.

We then enjoy a Valleys, Fells and Spells guided tour, with visits to many ancient and fascinating villages. From charming Whalley, perched on the banks of the River Calder and filled with historic buildings, to Downham, nestled within the stunning countryside and featured in many films and BBC drama series. We also pass the ruins of the 12th-century Sawley Abbey and Sabden village, home of two of the leading Pendle Witches.

York & Harrogate (full day)
We begin our day with some free time in the bustling historic city of York. The glorious York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe with world-famous stained glass windows is well worth a visit. Other highlights include the narrow cobbled streets of the ‘Shambles’ where the buildings date back to medieval times, the Jorvik Centre which tells the story of York’s Viking heritage, and the ancient walls surrounding the city.

Afterwards, we head to the elegant Victorian spa town of Harrogate, located in the heart of scenic Yorkshire. Notable sights include the Royal Pump Room and the Grade II listed Royal Hall, and don’t miss the attractive Montpellier Quarter with its pedestrianised streets lined with 19th-century buildings.
