Itinerary

Description

Recently awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, the Lake District is a region of outstanding natural beauty boasting some of England’s finest scenery. In addition to the picturesque rural villages and breathtaking lakes, there are also some magnificently grand houses, many of which have remained in the same family for generations. The fascinating heritage of these properties is reflected in their architectural grandeur outside, and superb collections waiting to be discovered within.

Coach Itinerary

Thursday: Arrival
We check in to the Newby Bridge Hotel in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager followed by a three-course evening meal.

Friday: Holker Hall & Leighton Hall
Our first visit is to Holker Hall, home of Lord and Lady Cavendish, where we enjoy a guided tour. Though parts of the house date back to the 16th century, a new wing was built following a disastrous fire in the late 19th century in Victorian Tudor style with mullioned windows, gables and turrets. Set in 25 acres of romantic formal and woodland gardens and ancient parkland, the hall is a delightful family home with fine displays of antique furniture and art.

Afterwards we head to Leighton Hall, the ancestral home of the world-renowned Gillow furniture family. The present house was built in 1759-61 with the Gothic style façade being added between 1822 and 1825, followed by a new wing in 1870. Our fascinating house tour reveals the colourful heritage of the hall and the Gillow family as well as unusual pieces of Gillow furniture, objets d’art and paintings. Our tour is followed by afternoon tea and we also have a chance to wander around the attractive gardens and spectacular grounds.

In the evening we enjoy a three-course dinner and an interesting themed talk from a guest speaker.

Saturday: Brantwood House, Steam Yacht Cruise on Coniston Water & Hawkshead
In the morning, we celebrate the Arts and Craft movement at Brantwood House, former home of John Ruskin, where we enjoy a guided tour and morning refreshments. Brantwood is filled with many fine paintings, beautiful furniture and Ruskin’s personal treasures and offers a fascinating insight into the world of the famous writer, artist and social reformer.

We then take a boat trip across Coniston Water, with its backdrop of spectacular scenery, aboard the steam yacht Gondola. The original Gondola was first launched in 1859 and has been completely rebuilt by the National Trust. Coniston Water is the Lake District’s third largest lake and was the inspiration for the Swallows and Amazons book.

We return to the hotel via the picturesque village of Hawkshead with its pretty cottages clustered around medieval squares and lining narrow lanes, and its associations with William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

This evening, we enjoy a three-course dinner back at the hotel.

Sunday: Ambleside & Muncaster Castle
We start the day in the bustling town of Ambleside situated on the northern shores of Lake Windermere where we have free time to explore at leisure. The town has an abundance of craft shops, galleries, cosy pubs and cafés.

We continue on to Muncaster Castle, where we enjoy a light lunch. Home to the Pennington family since 1208, the castle has a colourful history and an extensive collection of 16th and 17th century furniture, paintings and family portraits which we discover on our guided tour. We also have time to admire the castle’s lovely gardens, home to one of Europe’s largest collections of rhododendrons.

We return to our hotel for a three-course dinner.

Monday: Abbot Hall Art Gallery & Levens Hall
We head to Kendal and the Abbot Hall Art Gallery, originally designed as an opulent house by architect John Carr in 1759. Kendal’s finest historic house is now an award-winning art gallery, showcasing a variety of works by a wealth of artists including George Romney, Daniel Gardner and John Ruskin.

The afternoon is spent at Levens Hall, a captivating Elizabethan mansion built around a 13th-century pele tower. The hall has one of the best-preserved Elizabethan interiors in the UK with original oak panelling, rich leather wall coverings and ornate plasterwork and has been in continual family ownership since 1590. Each owner has left their mark on the architectural fabric of the building and its contents with fine furniture, paintings, the earliest English patchwork and other historical artefacts on display. Levens Hall is also home to a world-renowned topiary garden with ancient cut trees and colourful borders.

This evening, we enjoy a three-course dinner back at the hotel.

Tuesday: Departure
After breakfast, we check out of the hotel for our journey home.

Please note: This tour involves a fair amount of walking on sometimes uneven surfaces and may not be suitable for those with limited mobility. Some days will also involve fairly long coach journeys.
