Itinerary

Description

The English counties which lie along the border with Wales are known as the Welsh Marches, a lovely area of varied natural beauty packed with picturesque valleys, rolling hills, historic castles and charming towns and villages. From Shropshire’s Shrewsbury to the county town of Hereford, we explore the delights of this stunning region and take a step back in time on the Severn Valley Railway for a wonderful journey through picture-postcard landscapes. We also experience what life was like for Victorians here, as we visit a small industrial town in the year 1900 and discover the working factories, shops and cottages.

Itinerary

Day 1
Check in to the Telford Hotel & Golf Resort in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager followed by dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 – Shrewsbury, River Severn Cruise & Blists Hill Victorian Town
This morning we head to the picturesque town of Shrewsbury. Here we board the charming Sabrina and enjoy a leisurely cruise complete with tea and biscuits. We discover the town from a unique perspective as we voyage down the River Severn and learn about the history of Shrewsbury. We begin the journey at Victoria Quay near the Welsh Bridge, which was built in 1795, before cruising past Shrewsbury Castle, the town walls, Shrewsbury Abbey and more.

We continue to Blists Hill Victorian Town, a fascinating open-air museum which recreates the sights, sounds and smells of a typical Victorian town in the year 1900; a time when Queen Victoria had been on the throne for 63 years and the national average wage was around £42 a year. Discover more about Victorian life as you stroll through authentic shops and cottages, watch tradespeople in action in their atmospheric workshops and factories, and enjoy fish and chips – cooked the traditional way in beef dripping.

Tonight, we enjoy dinner together back at the hotel.

Day 3 – Ludlow & Hereford
Today we travel first to the thriving medieval town of Ludlow, which boasts a magnificent ruined castle as its centrepiece. Described by Sir John Betjeman as ‘probably the loveliest town in England’, the streets are lined with medieval and Tudor style half-timbered and Georgian buildings.

After enjoying lunch together we have time to explore Hereford, a cathedral city steeped in history. Discover the Hereford Museum and Art Gallery which has been exhibiting artefacts and local works since 1874, step back into 17th-century Herefordshire at the Black and White Museum in Hugh Town to get an insight into life in Jacobean times, and don’t miss the 13th-century Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral, the largest medieval map of the world in existence.

This evening we dine together back at the hotel.

Day 4 – Much Wenlock & the Severn Valley Railway
Our first stop today is the beautiful medieval market town of Much Wenlock, full of twisting streets, traditional shops and the remains of a magnificent 12th-century Priory. The town’s extensive history is reflected in its varied architecture, with fine medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings on display.

We continue to Bridgnorth, where we board our train on the Severn Valley Railway. We enjoy a picturesque journey meandering through the Shropshire countryside and into Worcestershire, passing quaint towns and villages along the way. Take in the spectacular views as we also enjoy Sunday lunch on board before arriving in Kidderminster.

The evening is left free to spend at leisure.

Day 5
After breakfast, it’s time to check out of the hotel for the journey home.
