Itinerary

Description

Writers have flocked to south Devon down the centuries, inspired by the stunning coastal vistas, picture-postcard villages and wild landscapes. We enjoy this impressive scenery as we explore fascinating houses and magical gardens including the beloved holiday home of Agatha Christie, one of Britain’s best-loved writers.

Coach Itinerary

Excursion One - Greenway & Coleton Fishacre
We head to Dartmouth where we board the ferry which takes us to Greenway, the much-loved holiday home of the famous author Agatha Christie and her family. Nestled on the side of the River Dart and surrounded by a picturesque woodland garden, this atmospheric house is set in the 1950s and contains many of the family’s collections.

From Greenway, we journey to Coleton Fishacre, a 1920s Arts and Crafts-style house built for the D’Oyly Carte family. The sophistication of the house’s surviving Art Deco interior contrasts with the magical 30 acre garden, complete with views out to sea.

We return to Torquay late afternoon where there is time to explore at leisure.

Excursion Two - Buckland Abbey, Plymouth & Saltram
Founded in 1278, Buckland Abbey was the last of the Cistercian monasteries to be built in medieval England and Wales. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Buckland became the home of Elizabethan seafarers Sir Roger Grenville and Sir Francis Drake and remained in the Drake family for around 400 years. Part museum, part house, it is filled with treasures such as the legendary Drake’s Drum.

We then travel to Plymouth, a handsome city with a wonderful waterfront that houses the historic Barbican and Sutton Harbour. Around the Barbican, a vibrant place of cobbled streets and narrow lanes, there is a wide range of shops, galleries, pubs and restaurants set amidst picturesque scenery.

Our last stop of the day is Saltram, an elegant Georgian mansion set in a rolling landscape park and one of the National Trust’s least discovered treasures. Home to the Parker family for several generations, the house is a rare survival of the period; particularly because it comes complete with its original, impressively lavish contents, including stunning paintings, ceramics and textiles.

Excursion Three - Knightshayes & Killerton
Our first excursion is to Knightshayes, one of England’s finest Victorian Gothic houses by eccentric designer William Burges. Full of quirks and curiosities, the mansion boasts intricate carvings and impressive ceilings plus a ‘medieval’ Great Hall with minstrels’ gallery. The garden is also a delight to explore with over 1200 plant species unique to Knightshayes, representing one of the most varied collections in the Trust.

Home to the Acland family until 1944, Killerton is a fine 18th-century house surrounded by a glorious landscape garden and parkland. While vital conservation work is carried out, the ground floor of the house has a special exhibition which tells the history of Killerton and its vast 6,400 estate as well as the captivating story of how Sir Richard Acland’s strong political beliefs led him to give up the family home and inheritance to the National Trust.
