Itinerary

Description

The Cotswolds is a pastoral landscape of gently rolling hills, idyllic views and quintessentially English towns and villages of honey-coloured stone where time seems to have stood still. These picture postcard scenes are complemented by some of the finest gardens in England, bursting with colour and interest, including Hidcote Manor Garden, created by the great horticulturist Major Lawrence Johnston.

Coach Itinerary

Excursion One - Kiftsgate Court Gardens, Hidcote Manor Garden & Mickleton
We travel to Kiftsgate Court Gardens, set on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment with lovely views towards the Malvern Hills. The gardens are the creation of three generations of women gardeners, started by Heather Muir in the 1920s. Developed organically with harmonious colour schemes, the gardens have many unusual shrubs and plants and are known for the Kiftsgate rose, a scented climbing rose claimed to be the largest rose in Britain.

We then head to Hidcote Manor Garden, an exquisite Arts and Crafts garden created by the reclusive American horticulturist, Major Lawrence Johnston. The garden is laid out as a series of colourful and intricately designed ‘rooms’ and features many plants that were collected on Johnston’s trips to far flung places.

En-route back to the hotel, we make a short stop in the village of Mickleton with its delightful mix of black and white timbered cottages and mellow Cotswold limestone buildings.

Excursion Two - Bourton-on-the-Water, Snowshill Manor & Broadway
We start the day in Bourton-on-the-Water. Regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England, this idyllic Cotswold village boasts honey-coloured stone buildings, elegant low bridges that cross the gently flowing River Windrush and tree-shaded river banks.

Our next stop is Snowshill Manor. This Cotswold manor house was bought by Charles Wade for just one purpose; to house the extraordinary treasures he collected over his lifetime. Every room is filled with hundreds of objects, from the everyday to the extraordinary including Japanese samurai armour, bicycles and in particular, musical instruments.

Afterwards, we make our way to the picturesque Cotswold village of Broadway. The pretty High Street is lined with horse chestnut trees and a mixture of period houses and picture-perfect stone cottages, pubs and shops.

Excursion Three - Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh & Coughton Court
Our first stop is the beautiful market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. The highest of the Cotswold towns, it was once an important trade centre and is renowned for its traditional stone buildings and wonderful collection of artisanal boutiques.

We also pay a brief visit to Moreton-on-Marsh, a traditional Cotswold market town and a former coaching station with elegant 17th and 18th-century inns and houses.

From here we head to Coughton Court. Home to the Throckmorton family for 600 years, this imposing Tudor house is still very much a family home with an intimate feel. While the interior gives us a unique insight into the history of the Catholic faith in this country, the spectacular, award-winning gardens feature colourful rose displays in the walled garden, herbaceous borders, a bog garden, orchards and a lake.

Please note:
This tour involves some walking around gardens on sometimes uneven ground and is therefore unsuitable for those with limited mobility. Suitable footwear is required.
