Itinerary

Description

Our brand new festive break explores the iconic buildings and rich history of south Wales, from the jewel in the crown of Welsh fairytale castles to one of Europe’s leading open-air museums. We also explore Wales’ capital of Cardiff, magically transformed at this wonderful time of year with lights and decorations. Discover for yourself the wonder of the Welsh festive period immortalised in Dylan Thomas’ famous poem A child’s Christmas in Wales.

Self Drive

Excursion One – Cardiff Castle & Cardiff National Museum & Art Gallery

We travel to the Welsh capital of Cardiff and head first to Cardiff Castle. The castle’s history spans over 2,000 years, although the Gothic Victorian fantasy castle we see today was created for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, one of the world’s richest men. We discover the lavish and opulent interiors, beautifully decorated for Christmas and rich with murals, stained glass, marble, gilding and elaborate wood carvings on our house tour.

Later, we visit Cardiff National Museum & Art Gallery, home to one of Europe’s finest art collections. Alongside one of Europe’s best collections of Impressionist works, the museum houses 500 years of paintings, drawings, sculpture, silver and ceramics from across the world, and an important collection of Welsh art.

Excursion Two – Llandaff Cathedral & St Fagans National Museum of History

This morning we head to one of Cardiff’s most striking landmarks, Llandaff Cathedral, where we enjoy a guided tour. Built in the 12th century, the cathedral has undergone several major upheavals and restorations in its colourful history including being overrun by Parliamentarian troops during the English Civil War and being severely damaged by a German landmine during the Second World War.

Next is St Fagans National Museum of History, one of Europe’s leading open-air museums set in the grounds of St Fagans Castle, a late 16th-century manor house donated to the Welsh people by the Earl of Plymouth in 1948. Over 40 original buildings from different historical periods have been re-erected in the parkland while craftsmen demonstrate their traditional skills, giving us an insight into the rich heritage and culture of Wales and its people.

Excursion Three Tredegar House & Dyffryn Gardens

We start the morning at Tredegar House, a late 17th-century restoration house surrounded by 90 acres of parkland. For more than 500 years it was home to one of the greatest Welsh families, the Morgans, later Lords Tredegar, and their fascinating narrative is told throughout the house, which is beautifully decorated for a traditional Victorian Christmas.

We continue on to Dyffryn Gardens, an exceptional example of Edwardian garden design. Designed by eminent landscape architect Thomas Mawson, the gardens cover 55 acres and feature a stunning collection of intimate garden rooms, formal lawns and an extensive arboretum.
