Itinerary

Description

Fancy escaping into a fairy tale landscape brimming with whispering forests, alluringly beautiful lakes and enchanting islands bejewelled with Gothic castles? This trip to the Baltics promises storybook scenery and diverse cultures in abundance. Living up to the ‘small, but with a big personality’ stereotype, the trilogy of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania each offers something unique to this unforgettable getaway. Think teeny turreted capital cities, curvy Baroque architecture and haunting war-torn histories.

Air Itinerary

Day 1

We fly to Riga and transfer to our hotel in the city where we stay for two nights.

Day 2 – Riga

Latvia’s capital city of Riga is a striking patchwork of Gothic spires, cross-stitched with meandering cobbled lanes, canals and a whole heap of art nouveau buildings; we’re talking the biggest collection in the world! Once a thriving Baltic port, the city also has a troubled and complicated history; having been ruled by multiple foreign powers, and we discover more during our guided walking tour of the Old Town this morning. We also have the chance to enjoy a short organ music concert in the striking Dome Cathedral before we see some more city sights during our coach tour, along with a visit to The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia this afternoon.

Day 3 – Rundāle Palace & Vilnius

Today we transfer from Riga to Vilnius; the capital of Lithuania, where we stay for the next two nights. En route we pay a visit to Rundāle Palace, one of Latvia's most impressive examples of Baroque and Rococo art. Designed by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, it was built as the private residence for the Duke of Courland in the 18th century and has been painstakingly restored, having been severely damaged during multiple wars. After exploring the palace museum and the royal gardens, inspired by the gardens at Versailles, we enjoy an included lunch together before making our way to Vilnius.

This evening we get our bearings of Vilnius’ Old Town during a guided walking tour. Architecturally, the pint-sized city is something of a chameleon; peppered with a collection of weathered buildings and Catholic church spires, along with the silhouettes of the Choral Synagogue and the Flame of Hope sculpture, which memorialises the majority of the city’s Jewish population who were tragically killed in the Holocaust.

Day 4 – Trakai Island Castle & KGB Museum

This morning we take an excursion to Trakai Island Castle, which was once home to each of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Known as ‘the Jewel of Lake Galvė’, Trakai derives from the Lithuanian word for ‘glade’ and the rosy-red castle sits pretty atop a leafy island tucked within a vast (and very photogenic) national park. We find out more about life at the castle through the ages as we take in the quiet chapel, shady courtyards and interesting exhibits.

Later, back in Vilnius, we visit theKGB Museum. KGB stands for Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti, which translates to ‘Committee for State Security’ and the museum itself is dedicated to Vilnius’ occupations and freedom fights. Exhibitions are filled with documents and photographs related to everything from the Soviet dictatorship and the forces of Stalin to the chilling Nazi occupation and Holocaust years. We also discover the haunting prison-interrogation isolation cells and execution chamber as we learn all about the resistance movement in Lithuania.

Day 5 – Hill of Crosses & Jurmala

We check out of our hotel and head back across the Lithuanian-Latvian border to Jurmala, where we stay for one night.

On the way we visit the Hill of Crosses, a national pilgrimage site which symbolises the spirit and faith of the Lithuanian people, who survived so much oppression over the years. More than 100,000 different sized crosses are united on this hillside – likely a pre-Christian place of worship – which withstood countless demolition attempts from both the Soviet Union and the KGB. There is also a nearby chapel and monastery, offering perfectly framed views of the sacred hillside.

Day 6 – Tallinn

We make our way through Estonia to Tallinn, where were stay overnight. As one of the highlights of this break, get ready to be wowed by one of the prettiest skylines in the Baltics! A flurry of curvy, domed basilicas cosy up with a troop of medieval turrets and towers in a rainbow swirl of a cityscape.

We enjoy an included lunch before embarking on a guided walking tour of the Old Town, which boasts UNESCO World Heritage Site status. From opulent Russian Revival style architecture and a fascinating sea-trading history to quaint merchant houses and one of Europe’s most complete city walls, there is so much for us to discover (and photograph) in this stunning capital city.

Day 7 – Tallinn & Riga

After enjoying the morning at leisure for further exploration of Tallinn, we set off back to Latvia for our final overnight stay back at our hotel in Riga. This evening we enjoy a farewell dinner and folk show in the city.

Day 8

We check out of our hotel and transfer to Riga airport for our flight home.
