Itinerary

Description

Taking in three stunning cities in one of the most breathtaking Spanish regions, this thrilling journey of discovery has been crafted to show you the best of Andalusia. An absorbing mix of authentic cultures, spectacular scenery, traditional cuisine and incredible architecture awaits, and Braemar will bring it all closer to you by docking centrally in every port.

Self Drive Itinerary

Day 1 – Home pickup & embarkation in Southampton / Days 2-4 – At Sea
A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home for your comfortable journey in a top specification car so you can begin your holiday in style. On arrival at Southampton Cruise Terminal, we board the Braemar and begin our journey, taking time to relax in our cabins or on deck and enjoying the use of the ship’s range of leisure facilities.

Day 5 – Malaga, Spain
We arrive in Malaga, situated on Andalusia's beautiful Mediterranean coast. Malaga offers everything you would expect from a city on the Costa del Sol: seemingly endless stretches of golden sand beaches, fantastic restaurants serving traditional tapas and friendly bars. There's much more to the region's captivating capital though. Dig a little deeper and a wealth of cultural, historical, artistic and architectural treasures reveal themselves, such as Catedral de Málaga, the statuesque and striking Alcazaba Fortress and Castillo de Gibralfaro. Not-to-be-missed is the Picasso Museum, which exhibits a fantastic collection of masterpieces from arguably Malaga's most famous 'son', Pablo Picasso.

Day 6 – Gibraltar
Our next port of call is the British overseas territory of Gibraltar on Spain's south coast, dominated by a 426m-high limestone ridge: The Rock. The Rock of Gibraltar is a sentinel that guards the Straits, and the overtly-British town nestled between the European and African continents. Its atmosphere is all the more familiar due to its helmeted policemen, red pillar boxes, fish and chip shops, traditional pubs and Marks & Spencer shops.

Layers of fortifications on The Rock include the remains of a 14th-century Moorish Castle and the 18th-century Great Siege Tunnels. The Europa Point Lighthouse and St Michael’s limestone cave light show are both well worth seeking out. Resolutely British for nearly 300 years, Gibraltar’s unique history is of interest but it's the camera-loving Barbary Apes that tend to steal the show.

Days 7 & 8 – Seville, Spain
We moor up in Seville. Compact, rich in history and famous for its flamenco, tapas bars and orange trees, the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region is bursting with antique charm. Located on the plain of the Guadalquivir River, Seville’s old Roman city is now home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The city’s significant landmarks include the ornate Moorish-Renaissance Alcázar Palace complex, and the 18th-century Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza bullring. The colossal Gothic Seville Cathedral is the site of Christopher Columbus’s tomb and the Giralda, an imposing bell tower built on a minaret, is another landmark not to be missed. Many arrive ready to soak up the atmosphere in the city’s old town and explore the cobbled streets of the Santa Cruz Quarter.

Day 9 – Cádiz, Spain
Today we cruise into Cádiz, one of Europe's most ancient cities, which hugs Andalusia’s sunlit Atlantic coast and is characterised by palm trees, lookout towers and weathered old buildings. Now into its fourth millennium, Cádiz's fascinating Old Town district features huge stone walls from the 1500s and is home to a wealth of historic highlights, including the beautifully crafted 18th-century Cádiz Cathedral.

Boasting over 100 watchtowers, including the iconic Torre Tavira, traditionally used for spotting ships; traditional tapas bars serving delicious traditional cuisine and local seafood; and fascinating maritime history; Cádiz offers a plethora of authentic sights and experiences. The winding streets assume the feel of a carnival, packed-out with friendly locals and humming to the sounds of upbeat alegrías (flamenco songs).

Day 10 – Lisbon, Portugal
Our final destination is Lisbon. Stretched across its seven trademark hills overlooking the River Tagus estuary, Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city is a cinematic collection of cobbled alleyways, pastel-coloured buildings, ancient ruins and white-domed cathedrals. Decimated by an earthquake in 1755, modern Lisbon has been shaped by that eventful day. The Pombaline architecture that now defines the city represents some of the first seismically-protected buildings in Europe.

The city’s bridges include the Ponte 25 de Abril – similar to the Golden Gate in San Francisco – while Lisbon’s many fascinating museums include the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Lisbon is also a shopper’s paradise, with the Centro Commercial Colombo – the biggest shopping mall on the Iberian Peninsula – and the elegant Avenidas Novas.

Days 11 & 12 – At Sea / Day 13 – Disembarkation in Southampton
After a couple of days at leisure on the ship, we arrive back in Southampton where we disembark and are met by our chauffeur for the journey home – a luxurious and stress-free way to end the holiday.
