Coach Itinerary

Excursion One – Oxford & Blenheim Palace

Our first excursion takes us to historic Oxford, known as the city of dreaming spires and famed for its world-renowned university colleges. On our guided walking tour, we discover the history of many of the city’s magnificent buildings including the colleges of the iconic Oxford University.

Next is Blenheim Palace, set in over 2,000 acres of beautiful parkland landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown. We explore the palace, decorated sumptuously for Christmas and glittering with festive lights. As the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough, the palace is synonymous with the Churchill family and is the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. A permanent exhibition commemorates the life of this famous wartime Prime Minister, whilst the magnificent State Rooms reveal a superb collection of tapestries, paintings, porcelain and furniture. Outside, there is an enchanting Christmas market bursting with homemade gifts and tasty treats.

Excursion Two – Hartwell House & Waddesdon Manor

A delightful festive lunch awaits at the Hartwell House & Spa. Once a wonderful stately home that was donated to the National Trust, it is now run as a luxury hotel and is set in over 90 acres of glorious gardens and parkland. The estate’s history stretches back nearly a thousand years while the house itself dates from the 17th century. In the early 19th century the exiled king, Louis XVIII, held court here and, more recently, Bill Clinton addressed the American people from Hartwell’s library. In the grounds stand the ruins of St Mary's Church, a redundant Anglican church now under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

We continue to Waddesdon Manor, built by the wealthy Rothschild family in the style of a Renaissance château and filled with royal treasures. We discover the opulent interiors, given an extra sparkle around Christmas time with lavish festive decorations. The Christmas theme continues into the gardens with light trails and stunning illuminations, including Waddesdon’s 30ft high real Christmas tree with its magical fairy lights. There is also time to enjoy Waddesdon’s Christmas Fair, a wonderfully festive shopping experience set against the backdrop of the illuminated North Front of the Manor. From unique gifts and decorations to seasonal treats, there are over 80 hand-selected exhibitors housed in charming wooden chalets. There is time to enjoy dinner here before we return to the hotel.
