Itinerary

Description

On this enchanting break we explore some of the finest houses and estates in the heart of England, beautifully decorated for Christmas with glittering lights, twinkling trees and charming natural garlands. A sparkling welcome awaits at Hardwick Hall, Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall, all filled with fascinating stories and unique  treasures just waiting to be discovered. The highlight of our getaway is, of course, a visit to the magnificent Chatsworth House, nestled in the idyllic Derbyshire countryside and renowned for its stunning festive decorations. The magical Christmas Fayre here is a delightful place to start your Christmas shopping and offers the perfect way to get into the festive spirit.

Itinerary

Excursion One – Hardwick Hall, Chatsworth House & Christmas Fayre

Our first visit is to the impressive Hardwick Hall. Ordered in the 16th century by Bess of Hardwick, England’s richest woman after her Queen, Elizabeth I, Hardwick is a striking Elizabethan treasure and masterpiece. The lavish number of windows (at a time when glass was a luxury) inspired the neat phrase, ‘Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall’. The rooms are filled with opulent furnishings and tapestries, preserved by successive generations of the Devonshire family before they passed the house to the care of the National Trust. The Hall is lovingly decorated for the festive season, festooned with beautiful wreaths inside and natural willow creations and evergreen foliage outside.

We continue to the spectacular Chatsworth House for the highlight of our break. This spectacular estate is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and has witnessed sixteen generations of the powerful Cavendish family and boasts grandiose interiors, wonderful grounds and a superlative art collection. Known for its magical atmosphere, beautiful seasonal decorations and special Christmas Fayre, Chatsworth is the perfect place to celebrate the festive season. Browse the wide range of market stalls for unique Christmas gifts and enjoy the live musical entertainment with a warming, tasty treat in hand.

Excursion Two – Kedleston Hall & Sudbury Hall

This morning we make our way to Kedleston Hall, architect Robert Adam’s Neo-classical masterpiece. The Curzon family have lived here since the 12th century and Lord Curzon’s Eastern Museum is full of curios from the days of the Empire, including religious, military and domestic objects. The house was also used as a key filming location for The Duchess and boasts opulent interiors in the saloon, library, drawing room, and more. At this magical time of year, the hall is decorated in all its festive finery, with the highlight being the twinkling State Apartment. You can also go for a wintery stroll in the surrounding parklands or enjoy a mince pie in Kedleston’s restaurant.

Next stop is Sudbury Hall, the unique 17th-century country home of the Vernon family. Whilst Sudbury dates from the reign of Charles II, it is Jacobean in conception with its extensive gallery and grand staircase. Admire the lavish interiors, beautifully dressed for Christmas, and discover the stunning plasterwork, wood carvings and paintings by craftsmen such as Grinling and Gibbons. The National Trust Museum of Childhood is housed in the old servants’ wing and offers a fascinating exploration of childhood from times gone by.
