Itinerary

Description

The pastoral landscapes of the Cotswolds, with their gently rolling hills scattered with honey-coloured stone villages, provide a beautiful backdrop to some of Britain’s most impressive homes. On our festive break, we discover the exceptional architecture of Waddesdon Manor and Churchill’s birthplace of Blenheim Palace as well as uncover the intriguing and absorbing life story of William Shakespeare in the places he called home.

Self Drive

Excursion One – Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre, Hall’s Croft, Shakespeare’s New Place & Baddesley Clinton
We make our way to the iconic Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre in Stratford. We enjoy a guided tour of the front of house areas where we take a journey from the beginnings of the theatre in 1879 to the present day, hear behind-the-scenes secrets and learn how costumes are made and how effects are achieved. We enjoy morning coffee after our tour.

Afterwards, we explore Hall’s Croft, the elegant Jacobean home of Shakespeare's daughter Susanna and her husband Dr John Hall. Enjoy the luxurious rooms and beautiful decoration of this fascinating house, befitting a wealthy physician of Dr Hall’s status.

Shakespeare’s New Place was the family home from 1597 until Shakespeare’s death in 1616. Although the house was demolished in 1759, a beautiful garden has been designed to commemorate the importance of the site. This contemporary landscape reveals the footprint of the family home with commissioned artworks throughout the site plus a sunken Knot Garden and exhibition centre.

In the afternoon we visit Baddesley Clinton, an atmospheric, medieval manor house dating back to the 13th century. This moated house and its extensive formal gardens are steeped in history, from its use as a place of hiding and refuge for Catholic priests to the story of the Victorian Quartet; four writers and artists who used Baddesley as a retreat from the modern world. The house is decorated with natural yuletide decorations and traditionally dressed trees and a roaring fire in the Great Hall adds to the festive atmosphere.

Excursion Two – Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Scenic Cotswolds & Waddesdon Manor
We begin the day back in Stratford at Shakespeare's Birthplace where we explore the extraordinary story of Shakespeare in the house where he was born and grew up in. We also have a chance to view rare artefacts from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s world class collections.

We then enjoy a scenic drive through the Cotwolds, a pastoral landscape of gently rolling hills scattered with honey-coloured stone towns and villages. Our route takes us via the beautiful market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, renowned for its traditional stone buildings and wonderful collection of artisanal boutiques.

We continue on to the spectacular Waddesdon Manor, built by the wealthy Rothschild family in the style of a Renaissance château. Here we explore the interiors that are given an extra sparkle around Christmas with lavish festive decorations. The Christmas theme continues into the gardens with stunning illuminations, including Waddesdon’s 30ft high real Christmas tree on the North Front with its magical fairy lights. We stay at Waddesdon until dusk to experience the full spectacle of the lights, and will return to our hotel later this evening.

Excursion Three – Woodstock & Blenheim Palace
We make a short stop in Woodstock, a picturesque, historic market town on the edge of the Blenheim estate. Here, we have some free time to explore the honey-coloured streets with their antique shops, art galleries and tea rooms.

Next is Blenheim Palace, set in over 2,000 acres of beautiful parkland landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown. As the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough, the palace is synonymous with the Churchill family and is the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. A permanent exhibition commemorates the life of this famous wartime Prime Minister, whilst the magnificent State Rooms reveal a superb collection of tapestries, paintings, porcelain and furniture. We enjoy a themed visit of this impressive property including the chance to admire the spectacular festive decorations inside the Palace as well as a Christmas market in the Great Court.
