Steaming Through The Harz Mountains | 2027
7 days
7 DAYS | HALF BOARD | BY COACH
NEW FOR 2027DOOR TO DOOR SERVICE INCLUDED*
Now a thriving tourist region, but once hidden behind the Iron Curtain, the Harz is an area of gently forested slopes, quaint medieval towns and a fascinating narrow-gauge steam railway system quite unlike any other. Our base is Braunlage, in the heart of the wooded glades of the Harz Mountains, a once thriving health resort which nowadays is a busy sports resort by winter and popular tourist centre by summer. From here we explore this fascinating region of Lower Saxony, by road and rail, taking in medieval villages, wonderful vistas and a glimpse of the area’s halcyon days of silver mining.

Itinerary
Itinerary
Your Itinerary:SUNDAY: Our Door to Door service collects you from home and transfers you to your tour coach, meeting your fellow travellers. Crossing the English Channel, we make our way south to our overnight hotel stop.
MONDAY: We travel into Germany today, pausing at the Möhne Dam, a target of the famous Dambuster Raids, before reaching the Harz Mountains and the Ahorn Harz Hotel for four nights in Braunlage.
TUESDAY: This morning we make our way to Wernigerode, known as the ‘colourful town of the Harz Mountains’ because of the kaleidoscopic paintwork on its half-timbered buildings. Here the steam trains of the narrow-gauge Harzquerbahn Railway puff heartily through the streets before ascending the mountains. From Wernigerode we join one of these steam trains to climb to the top of the Brocken Mountain at a height of 3490 feet, with rewarding views over the National Park as we ascend.
WEDNESDAY: A full day excursion touring the Harz Mountains by coach and train as we head to Alexisbad to join the Selketalbahn narrow gauge steam railway and travel along the peaceful valley of the River Selke to Gernrode. From here we continue by coach to Quedlinburg, one of the most remarkable highlights of the holiday, with over 1600 buildings listed as being of historic interest.
THURSDAY: Today we make our way through the heart of the Harz Mountains to the popular tourist centre of Goslar. This most popular of destinations has an impressive array of half-timbered buildings and handsome merchant houses – a poignant reminder of its past glories as the richest silver mining town in Europe.
FRIDAY: Leaving the Harz Mountains behind, we return through Germany and into Belgium for our final night stop.
SATURDAY: We head towards the Channel for our return crossing before safely taking you home with our Door to Door service.
