Secrets Of The Manx Isle
6 Days Half Board
In the midst of the Irish Sea, halfway between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, lies the remarkable Isle of Man. With its own parliament, postage stamps and over 1,000 years of history, it’s a fascinating and unforgettable place to visit. Our holiday combines the comfort of rail with the freedom of an Island Heritage Explorer Pass – making this a unique way to discover the many gems of this enchanting isle.
PLEASE NOTE: Price is per person and based on two people sharing a twin/double room. Single room supplements and upgrades are not included.
Sunday: Join your fellow travellers at London Euston for our lunchtime Virgin Trains journey to Liverpool. After a short transfer to the terminal we board the 19:15 fast ferry to Douglas. On arrival in Douglas we transfer to the Rutland Hotel for our five night stay.
Monday: A leisurely start to the day before we take the short walk along the promenade to take the electric train to Laxey. Here we join the Snaefell Mountain Railway for the ascent to the top of the Island’s only mountain. Far reaching views await – on a clear day as far as England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland! We return to Laxey with free time to discover the town and the famous Laxey Wheel – the world’s largest working waterwheel.
Tuesday: Today we explore the south of the island and board the Isle of Man Steam Railway to Port Erin with its beautiful bay and golden beach. Later we return by train to Castletown, the ancient capital of the Island, where there is time to explore the town and its many fascinating museums, including the House of Keys and Nautical Museum (both free of charge with your Heritage Explorer ticket).
Wednesday: By local road services we cross the island, to St Johns, setting of the annual open air Manx Parliament on Tynwald Hill. Then it’s on to the fishing port of Peel, with its ruined castle overlooking the harbour, a traditional kipper smokery and antique shops along the alleyways. With your pass perhaps take time to visit Peel castle or the House of Manannan where the island’s mythological sea god guides you through the rich Celtic and Viking past.
Thursday: Today we join the Manx Electric Railway and travel the complete length of the line to the harbour town of Ramsey in the north of the island. Hugging the coastline and offering lovely views and tranquil countryside this is a scenic delight. This afternoon we return to Douglas with the afternoon at leisure.
Friday: An early departure for the return fast ferry to Liverpool before our return journey to London Euston, arriving mid afternoon.
