Sunday: Join your Tour Manager at London King’s Cross Station in time for the lunchtime East Coast service to Newcastleupon-Tyne. On arrival we check in to the Station Hotel for three nights.
Monday: By coach today as we visit the magnificent Alnwick Castle & Gardens, home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland and seat of the Percy family for over 700 years. The iconic castle has been used for many films and TV series whilst the award-winning gardens are the devoted creation of the Duchess herself and now regarded as one of the finest in Britain.
Tuesday: We rejoin the rails today as we head up the East Coast, hugging the spectacular coastline to Edinburgh. On arrival we have arranged City Sightseeing tickets to explore the city by bus and at your own pace. Discover the majestic castle, the Royal Mile and the Royal residence of Holyroodhouse, before retracing our route back to Newcastle.
Wednesday: Enjoy time at leisure in Newcastle this morning, perhaps taking a stroll along the banks of the River Tyne to view the famous bridges. Mid-afternoon we take the rail service to Carlisle, through the Tyne Valley and alongside some of the remains of Hadrian’s Wall. On arrival we make the short walk to the County Hotel for our two night stay.
Thursday: By coach we head into the Lake District National Park, passing by the waters of Ullswater and ascending the Kirkstone Pass, with its breathtaking views, before reaching the shores of Lake Windermere and the pleasant resort of Bowness. Here we take a ‘Steamer’ cruise to Ambleside before returning via Grasmere, where the famous Lakeland poet William Wordsworth lived.
Friday: We depart Carlisle mid-morning to return to London Euston as our journey comes to a close.
