Among the fervent backdrops and ancient soils of the Mendip Hills, England’s smallest city, Wells, sits peacefully surrounded by thousands of years of history and legend. The magnificent Wells Cathedral is the focal point, along with the unique moated Bishop’s Palace, from which the finely preserved medieval centre wanders away into attractive lanes with many wonderful independent shops.

FULL DAY: Passing by ancient hills and woodlands we enter Salisbury Plain to reach the most ancient and mystical of sites in England, Stonehenge. Here we discover the remarkable stones that continue to mystify by their existence at Europe’s most famous pre-historic monument. We return via the market town of Shaftesbury where the Gold Hill, made famous in the ‘Hovis’ adverts, is the star attraction.
FULL DAY: To the Roman city of Bath, one of England’s best preserved Roman cities, where there is free time to explore the old Roman Baths, the historic Abbey or the elegant Georgian terraces in their distinctive honey-coloured stone.
HALF DAY: A half day excursion across the marshy Somerset Levels to Glastonbury, dominated by the ruined monastery of Glastonbury
Abbey, once believed to be the burial site of King Arthur, and with the hillock of Glastonbury Tor as a backdrop.
