Your ItineraryFULL DAY: Chartwell & Chiddingstone Village
This morning we make our way to Chartwell, which was the beloved family home of Winston Churchill for forty years. Having bought Chartwell in 1922, it became his solace away the demands of parliament, and it was where he indulged in his passion for painting among the surrounding gardens. This afternoon we head to Chiddingstone Village, a unique Tudor one-street village with wonderful half-timbered facades and stone-hung, red-tiled roofs. Bought by the National Trust in 1939 in order to ensure its preservation, today it remains a delight to explore.
FULL DAY: Scotney Castle & Sissinghurst Castle Gardens
Our first visit is to medieval Scotney Castle, where the ruins of the moated castle and adjacent Victorian mansion are set within picturesque gardens. From here we continue to Sissinghurst Castle Gardens, one of the finest gardens in the south of England, painstakingly ordered by colour and season to provide an ever-changing montage of flowers and shrubs. The moated Tudor house – one of the first to be built of brick – has a fascinating back story from its time as a 17th century prison, to the Second World War, when it was home to the women’s land army.
HALF DAY: Knole
Today we take-in the magnificence of Knole. This 600 year old estate, situated in the heart of Kent’s last medieval deer park, has been welcoming visitors to its showrooms for an astounding 400 years! Originally built as an archbishop’s palace, it is now in the hands of the Sackville Family, and their history can be discovered alongside centuries-old art and tapestries, while the courtyards, parkland and orangery are well worth exploring.
