Today we visit Alnwick Castle and Gardens, home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland and seat of the Percy family for the past 700 years. Here you can discover the iconic castle, used as a backdrop in many films over the years, as well as enjoy the beautiful gardens, the dream of the Duchess of Northumberland and now regarded as one of the finest gardens in Britain.
We head for Durham with its magnificent Norman cathedral, which towers above a loop in the River Wear and delightful, cobbled medieval streets.
