5 Day Coach Holiday

This holiday of contrasts is based in the traditional market town of Tubbercurry in County Sligo, where we stay at popular Murphy’s Hotel. Resting at the foot of the Ox Mountains, Tubbercurry features quaint streets and is close to Knocknashee - the Legendary Hill of the Fairies and one of the seven sacred hills of Ireland. We venture out to quaint Cong where the 1952 classic movie, The Quiet Man was filmed then continue to Westport, an enchanting town on the edge of an Atlantic inlet with a Georgian town centre and stone bridges linking a tree-lined promenade on the banks of the Carrowbeg River. We feast our eyes on the beautiful riverbanks the poet, W.B. Yeats described when we cruise on Lough Gill aboard the Rose of Innisfree. We also spend a day in colourful Carrick-on-Shannon, the thriving county town of County Leitrim with a modern marina that gives access to the River Shannon. Our final treat is a visit to King House, a lovingly restored Georgian mansion.

Your Excursions

Cong & Westport
We head firstly to the picturesque village of Cong, where the Oscar winning movie, The Quiet Man was filmed. Here we enjoy a guided walking tour learning all about Hollywood movie makers arriving in this sleepy settlement. Later we continue to Westport, a grand Georgian town, home to splendid churches, quaint avenues, a heritage centre and leafy streets with an irresistible attraction that leaves you longing to explore. Perhaps visit Westport House, one of County Mayo’s best loved attractions where you can uncover centuries of history in its sumptuously furnished period rooms and dark dungeons. Outside you’ll be enchanted by the formal gardens, riverbank walks, aviary, mini railway and a lake with pedal boats.

Rose of Innisfree
We head to historic Parke’s Castle to board the Rose of Innisfree tourist boat for a scenic sail on Lough Gill, taking in some of the spectacular scenery described so fondly by poet, W.B. Yeats. Lough Gill is an eight-kilometre-long limestone lake, steeped in myths and legends and a place of natural beauty.

King House & Carrick-on-Shannon
We visit King House, a unique architectural treasure built circa 1730 as a symbol of status that later became a military barracks. We move on to nearby Carrick-on-Shannon, this colourful riverside town boasts winding alleyways, historic buildings and a modern marina
that gives easy access to the River Shannon and its glassy lakes. It is home to the tiny but ornate Costello Chapel, believed to be the smallest chapel in Europe. Perhaps visit the town’s St George’s Heritage & Visitor Centre. Or head to The Dock – an attractive nineteenth century former courthouse that now houses art galleries.
