Your Excursions
Cheddar Gorge & WellsWe begin our day at Cheddar Gorge, an area of outstanding beauty with dramatic cliffs and spectacular stalactite caverns that reveal stories of our prehistoric ancestors. Its Gough’s Cave was home to ‘Cheddar Man’ – Britain’s oldest, complete skeleton, which was discovered in 1903. The cavern also features the largest underground river in the UK. We continue to medieval Wells, home to a magnificent cathedral with a soaring tower, and to the moated Bishop’s Palace & Gardens.
Taunton
Our treat today is Taunton, county town of Somerset. Perhaps visit the Museum of Somerset, housed in the twelfth century great hall of Somerset Castle, it tells the county’s story from prehistoric times through interactive media and artefacts including Roman coins. This venue is also home to the Somerset Military Museum. Elsewhere, you might like to visit the beautiful St Mary Magdalene Church with its soaring tower, relax in one of the pretty parks or browse the independent boutiques.
Tiverton, Horse Drawn Canal Cruise & Burnham
We journey to the town of Tiverton, home to a fifteenth century church, castle remains and a well-preserved merchant’s house. Look forward to a nostalgic horse-drawn barge trip along the picturesque Grand Western Canal. Afterwards, we continue to quaint Burnham-on-Sea, a former fishing village and now a popular seaside resort with a wide sandy beach and level promenade.
