5 Day Coach Holiday

On this themed holiday, we step back through the decades to experience the sights and sounds of Britain’s Home Front at Stockport Air Raid Shelters. This mile long network of tunnels was excavated into the town’s natural sandstone cliffs and they present an unparalleled insight into life in 1940s wartime Britain. On another day, walk through a timeline of history from WWI to the present day at the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester. View the thousands of artefacts, ranging from the First World War machine gun that fired the opening British round on the Western Front, to twisted and rusted steel recovered from the rubble of the World Trade Center in New York. For contrast, we enjoy an outing to  beautiful Buxton, a spa town nestled in the heart of the Peak District with landmarks such as Solomon’s Temple, the Grade I listed Crescent, the Devonshire Dome and Poole’s Cavern – a twomillion-year-old limestone cave.

Your Excursions

Stockport Air Raid Shelters
We visit the unique, award winning Stockport Air Raid Shelters, which opened in 1939 and were the largest purpose built shelters in the country. They were later extended to provide refuge for up to 6,500 people and were equipped with basic amenities such as electric lights, bunk beds and flushing toilets. Decades later, they became a visitor attraction where you can explore the authentically re-equipped original tunnels to experience daily life for local people in 1940s wartime Britain with the help of a state-ofthe-art audio guide.

Imperial War Museum
Look forward to a visit to Manchester’s Imperial War Museum North, located at The Quays waterfront development. Exhibits include films, sound recordings, letters and photographs, all depicting the impact of war on service personnel and civilians. See conflict through the eyes of artists and view the award winning 360 degree cinematic Big Picture Shows that poignantly and powerfully reflect on the immediate effects of war, as well as after the guns stop firing.

Landmarks include the Natural Baths, located on the site of Roman Baths, St Anne’s Well and the Old Hall Hotel, which dates back to 1573 and is where Mary, Queen of Scots once stayed. Marvel at the town’s centrepiece – the Grade I listed Georgian Crescent and view the Devonshire Dome – the largest unsupported dome in Europe. Browse the independent shops, hop on a Victorian tram-bus and don’t miss Poole’s Cavern where you can witness evidence of prehistoric life dating from Neolithic and Bronze Ages.
