Magnificent mountains, sparkling ponds, storybook villages and an enchanting capital city are just some of Austria’s charms. On this holiday we embark upon great railway journeys, showcasing spectacular scenery and reaching gems such as Hochschneeberg mountain station. Other delights include the tiny city of Mariazell, home to a twelfth century basilica, as well as the fairytale village of Melk with its well-preserved old town and Benedictine abbey. Look forward to a day in Vienna, renowned for imperial palaces, stirring music and the splendid architecture that brings the city’s history to life. Perhaps treat yourself to a horse and carriage ride to take in sights such as Hofburg Palace and the Heroes Square that stands in front of this eminent building.
Your Holiday Itinerary
Day One. We head to Hull for our overnight ferry to the continent enjoying dinner, entertainment and breakfast on board.
Day Two. We continue to our overnight dinner, bed and breakfast hotel in Germany.
Day Three. We proceed to the Nature Hotel Steinschalerhof and check in for our five night stay.
Day Four. Our first treat is a trip along the century old Schneebergbahn cog railway aboard the Salamander Train taking in spectacular vistas. This exhilarating forty minute ride from Puchberg takes you to Hochschneeberg mountain station at an altitude of 1800 metres. At the top, have a wander along the trails or relax with a coffee. In the afternoon, we take the train back down the mountain and return to our hotel where the owner, Mr Johann Weiss, tells us all about the history of the Mariazellerbahn – our next train trip.
Day Five. Today we board our carriage for our “train ride to Heaven” – the picturesque pilgrimage town of Mariazell. Enjoy stunning views of the Alps and the River Salza then take a wander around this unique town before tucking into an included lunch in the local Drei Hasen Hotel. Look forward to a guided tour through the Lebkuchen Museum Pirker where the famous gingerbread is made, then onwards into the beautifully ornate basilica. We return to our hotel by train for dinner and an evening of traditional music.
Day Six. A holiday highlight as we make our way to Vienna where a local guide shows us the impressive sights of the Austrian capital. Must sees include Schonbrunn Palace, St Stephen’s Cathedral and the glorious Rathaus. Afterwards, continue exploring at your own pace. This evening we enjoy dinner in the Heuringer restaurant in Vienna before returning to our hotel.
Day Seven. The treats keep coming as we head to the Danube Valley and to the fairytale village of Melk. Here we meet up with our guide for a tour of the abbey. In the afternoon, we continue to Emmersdorf from where we catch the Wachaubahn train to krems. At krems, we visit the Sandgrube 13 winery for an interesting tour through the vineyards. We return to our hotel in time for dinner.
Day Eight. We check out of our hotel and make our way to our dinner, bed and breakfast stop in Germany.
Day Nine. We continue to our ferry back to Hull with dinner, entertainment and breakfast onboard.
Day Ten. We make our way home.

Your holiday moves up a gear when you board your P&O ferry at Hull for your sailing to the continent. drop your overnight bag in your cabin then explore the ship or unwind with an aperitif in one of the bars.
On Board Dining
All GLENTON continental holidays include dinner and breakfast onboard. Head to ‘The Kitchen’ buffet restaurant where your waiter will show you to your table and take your order if you wish to purchase any drinks. Then you’re free to help yourself from the wide selection of tasty dishes from around the world. At breakfast, choose from continental or a fully cooked menu. Alternatively if you fancy treating yourself, why not upgrade to The Brasserie Restaurant and enjoy fine dining with full waiter service?
Make your way to the Show Lounge and enjoy live bands throughout the evening – there’s even a dance floor if you fancy a wee boogie! Or slow the pace down at the Piano Bar where you can sip a cocktail as you listen to mellow music. Perhaps you’d like to catch a blockbuster movie at the cinema or try your luck at the casino.
Your GLENTON continental holiday includes an air conditioned inside en suite cabin with bunk beds. However, you can upgrade to a cabin with level beds and/or sea view for a small supplement. Please ask your holiday advisor when booking.

Where advertised our door to door service is available to customers living within ten miles of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dunfermline and Hamilton. On our AIR & CRUISE holidays we offer an extended service with a radius of 35 miles from the listed points, for departures from Scottish ports and airports. Our much-loved free Door to Door service is available on all Glenton Palmer Select coach tours of four days or longer and many of our AIR & CRUISE holidays. A home collection may still be available from outside these areas but a supplement will apply.
Where advertised this free service it may be necessary to share your vehicle with other passengers on your tour. The pick-up will be at the address of the lead name on your booking. Additional pick-ups may be requested at a supplement of £20 per person. You will be driven from your home to a coach pick-up point and, on occasion, you may have to transfer to another vehicle before boarding the coach. Unfortunately, for operational and administrative reasons, Door to Door service may not be available for bookings made within 21 days of departure.Back to top
