Perhaps head to Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, home to a variety of birds with its stretch of unspoilt dunes, salt marshes and lagoons as well as an interesting visitor centre. Maybe you’d like to visit Bateman’s Brewery and take in a tour then a pint in the beer garden. For a change of scenery, we spend a day in historic Lincoln, home to a breathtaking cathedral which is regarded as one
of the finest gothic buildings in Europe. We also visit Gunby Estate Hall and Gardens – a country house dating from 1700 and set in Victorian walled gardens.
With its quaint cobbled streets, contemporary university, glorious cathedral, ancient castle and quirky shops, Lincoln promises a medley of ancient and modern. Tread the medieval cobbles of Castle Square or head down the Steep Hill to discover such historic gems as The Jew’s House and High Bridge along with cosy tearooms and convivial pubs. Perhaps you’ll visit The Collection, a stunning museum with an abundance of art and artefacts that date back as far as the Bronze Age.
Gunby Hall Estate & Gardens
Home to the Massingberd family, this splendid estate has ornate rooms full of character and has links to both Darwin and Tennyson. Explore three floors of the house viewing historic pieces amassed over generations and hearing stories about Gunby’s intriguing past from room guides. Outside, there are eight acres of gardens to enjoy featuring formal lawns, flower borders and vegetable patches. Perhaps complete your visit with a cuppa and cake in the charming tearoom.
