This fascinating holiday takes in a visit to the National Glass Centre, an attraction located at the University of Sunderland which showcases the creative potential of glass. Afterwards, we visit Durham City with its stunning cathedral and castle. A holiday highlight is when we uncover the North-East Land, Sea & Air Museum, an engrossing attraction with incredible exhibits that tells the story of conflicts through the experiences of local service personnel and civilians. Finally, we get up close and personal with the Angel of the North, regarded as the largest angel statue in the world. Free time in cosmopolitan Newcastle concludes an exciting break.
Guided tour of National Glass Centre & Durham
Our day gets underway with a guided tour of the National Glass Centre viewing behind the scenes areas, learning about the origins of glass and watching a glass blowing demonstration. We continue to Durham, a city steeped in a thousand years of history and boasting museums, ancient castles and historic houses, all bringing the past to life.
North-East Land, Sea & Air Museum
The wide range of exhibits includes over thirty aircraft in various stages of restoration including a Hawker-Hunter, an Avro-Vulcan and various Westland helicopters. You’ll also see WWII bicycles, armoured vehicles, anti-aircraft guns, field kitchens, a surface to air missile system, searchlights and a replica street and trenches.
Angel of the North & Newcastle
The colossal Angel of the North statue has the wingspan of a jumbo jet and is taller than four double decker buses! Designed by sculpture Antony Gormley, this iconic landmark has been welcoming visitors since 1998. We move on to Newcastle where you might like to view the tilting Millennium Bridge or visit the Norman Castle.
