Tucked away in County Tipperary, the picturesque market town of Roscrea was built around a seventh century monastery and is one of the oldest settlements on the island of Ireland, and our base for this scenic tour. Perhaps visit Roscrea Heritage Centre, which comprises of a grand thirteenth century motte castle, once used as a barracks, along with Damer House – a striking example of pre-Palladian architecture with rooms full of period furniture. Outside, the landscaped gardens feature an ornate fountain and a restored mill. Marvellous sightseeing takes us to enchanting Limerick, a walled city hugging the banks of the mighty River Shannon, and home to thirteenth century King John’s Castle, perched on King’s Island in the medieval heart of the metropolis. We also venture out to the bijou city of Kilkenny where you’ll find historic treasures around every corner. Our final treat is a visit to the intriguing Rock of Cashel, and then pretty Cahir.

LimerickThis enchanting walled city rests on the banks of the River Shannon and you’ll have free time to explore at your own pace. Don’t miss thirteenth century King John’s Castle, perched on King’s Island in the medieval heart of the city. A commanding fortress, it has a state-of-the-art visitor centre that brings history to life. Elsewhere, view the collections at the City Gallery of Art or rare antiquities at the Hunt Museum.
Kilkenny
This charming city abounds with historic treasures. Step behind the imposing stone walls of Kilkenny Castle, see the soaring eaves of St Canice’s Cathedral, view the colourful stained glass of medieval Black Abbey or explore Rothe House – a unique sixteenth century townhouse. Elsewhere, you’ll find the Kilkenny Design Centre shopping mall with its Irish handcrafted gifts, and St Mary’s Church, which houses the Medieval Mile Museum, filled with artefacts and sculptures.
Rock of Cashel & Cahir
The Rock of Cashel – also known as Cashel of the Kings & St Patrick’s Rock - is an intriguing group of medieval buildings set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale. The most impressive cluster of ancient buildings in Ireland, it includes a round tower, high cross, Romanesque chapel and gothic cathedral. It is a remarkable and spectacular tourist attraction. Later, we continue to the quaint town of Cahir.
