Itinerary

Overview

The Victorian town of Llandrindod Wells is perched seven hundred feet above sea level, surrounded by beautiful countryside and makes a charming base for our thrilling train-themed itinerary. In your free time, perhaps follow the leafy trails in Rock Park, view the artefacts at Radnorshire Museum or simply relax and watch the birds on the lake. We venture out to experience nostalgic train journeys while feasting our eyes on spectacular scenery. Wales is blessed with a number of working smaller gauge railways and these ‘Great Little Trains’ often traverse astonishingly steep inclines and are a tribute to the engineers who built the lines.

Your Holiday Itinerary

Day One. From local joining points we head to Llandrindod Wells and check into the Glen Usk Hotel.

Day Two. After breakfast we wind our way into the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park where we board the Brecon Mountain Railway. Look forward to stunning views as your train steams along the Taf Fechan Reservoir to Dol-y-Gaer. We arrive back in Llandrindod Wells early afternoon for some free time to explore.

Day Three. For our treat today we head to the bustling market town of Welshpool, terminus of the lovingly restored Llanfair Light Railway to board our carriage for a superb eight mile journey. In the afternoon, we continue to Talyllyn Railway, Abergynolwyn, for a spectacular steam train ride down the valley to the seaside resort of Tywyn.

Day Four. We snake through the mountains to the beauty spot of Devil’s Bridge to board the Vale of Rheidol Railway for the narrow gauge steam train ride down the valley to the seaside resort of Aberystwyth. Here we have free time to enjoy the pleasant promenade, sandy beaches, ruined castle and the university where Prince Charles once studied.

Day Five. After breakfast, we make our way home.
