Itinerary

Overview

You’ll find no finer example of a romantic Victorian folly than this heady mix of gothic, Jacobean and Greek revival architecture. A grandiose Grade II property on the Denbighshire coast, Bodelwyddan Castle was requisitioned by the army during World War One for the practice of trench warfare. It later became Lowther College and its Royale Bedroom was originally the headmaster’s study. The castle is home to impressive artefacts including letters from the trenches, weapons and uniforms as well as Victorian amusements. Stretch your legs on a woodland walk, wander around the maze or try archery or rifle shooting.

Your Excursions

Chester

We call at the walled city of Chester en route, home to pretty half-timbered architecture.

Llandudno

Perhaps head to Victoria Station and take a trip on Britain’s only cable-hauled tramway, climbing high through a nature reserve to the Halfway Station Exhibition. Maybe visit the pleasure pier, learn about the town’s history at the local museum or relax on West Shore Beach.

Caernarfon & Portmeirion

Our day gets underway with a visit to the walled town of Caernarfon, home to an imposing castle built at the behest of King Edward I. We continue to the Mediterranean style village of Portmeirion, familiar to many as the setting for the classic TV series, The Prisoner. We enjoy a scenic drive through Snowdonia National Park on our way back to the hotel.
