Windsor - In Windsor in the English county of Berkshire, is the largest inhabited castle in the world. It may be the most famous castle in the world. Together with Buckingham Palace in London and Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, it is one of the principal official residences of the British monarch. Queen Elizabeth II spends many weekends of the year at the castle, using it for both state and private entertaining. Her other two residences, Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle, are the Royal Family's private homes.
The town of Windsor grew up around Windsor Castle. Immediately opposite the main gate of Windsor Castle is the old medieval part of Windsor Town, a few streets of cobbles.
Today this area is purely for the visitors, a mix of shops, restaurants and pubs. Windsor is a shopper's paradise in the Royal Borough's historical heart where high street retailers, designer labels, antiques shops and department stores sit alongside quaint, specialist and souvenir shops.
