We continue to the magnificent medieval city of Salisbury with its historic streets and alleyways, charming half-timbered buildings, traditional English eating houses and character shopping streets, not to mention the UK’s finest medieval cathedral. Jane Austen House and Watercress Line Rail Journey - We travel to the pretty Georgian town of New Alresford where we board the popular ‘Watercress Line’ enjoying a scenic journey through 10 miles of beautiful Hampshire countryside, through the restful open spaces and famous topiary at Ropley, then up the steep climb to the picturesque country station at Medstead and Four Marks, the highest station in the South of England, and then down into the busy market town of Alton - each station has a distinct character that is a delight to explore. We then visit the home of Jane Austen. She spent the last eight years of her life at Chawton in the 17th century house which is now preserved in her memory and where most believe she wrote some of her best work.
