Day at leisure
A visit Santillana del Mar, a perfectly preserved medieval village. To meander through its cobbled streets and alleys, lined with ancient stone houses, has often been likened to entering a living museum. The nearby Altamira Caves are famous for their prehistoric paintings of boars, bison, deer and horses dating back to the end of the Ice Age. We include a visit to the nearby museum where they have re-created an exact copy of the original paintings using the same basic materials.
A half day excursion to the fishing villages of San Vicente de La Barquera, set in the middle of a nature reserve, and Comillas, a noble and aristocratic town built on rolling hills that shelter a beach and secluded harbour.
We depart for a guided excursion into the Picos de Europa national park with its spectacular jagged mountain peaks, traditional villages, lush vegetation and gorges that plunge into deep river valleys. We stop in the market town of Potes, with its many bridges, narrow streets and rambling houses before continuing to Fuente Dé and the opportunity to take the amazing cable car that takes you 900 metres up sheer rock cliffs to the summit. (Cable car cost not included).
We depart the hotel and travel to Santander and the opulent beach resort of El Sardinero. Its elegant cafes, colourful gardens and majestic white Grand Casino are overlooked by the Magdalena Palace and the huge gardens that surround it. We then board the ferry for the return overnight crossing (meals not included on board ship).
