County Durham Coastline & Durham
We head for the County Durham coastline to The Hartlepool Maritime Experience to visit the oldest British warship afloat, HMS Trincomalee, the steam paddle ship Wingfield Castle. Enjoy the historic dock and quayside, an audio visual experience of a British ship at war The fighting ships and also learn about the horrors of the press gangs. Find out about the legend of who hung the monkey at the Museum of Hartlepool. We continue to Durham where you have the afternoon at leisure.
Richmond, Raby Castle & Seaburn
A mix of history, gardens and market towns. We first visit the Market town of Richmond where you will have free time. Located just across the County Durham border in North Yorkshire, Richmond is a town of unique character and beauty, little changed through the centuries, and its cobbled market place is the largest in England. We then continue to Raby Castle and Gardens, home to Lord Barnard's family since 1626, Raby is one of the finest medieval Castles in England, rebuilt by the mighty Neville family in the 14th Century. The gardens are a mix of traditional 18th century ornamental Walled Gardens, Yew Hedges, Trees, Plants and Ornaments from the 18th and 19th centuries. We return to Seaburn via the market town of Bishop Auckland and Escomb Village, to admire the hidden little gem of Escomb Saxon Church, considered one of the finest surviving 7th century churches in the country.
Tynemouth Coastal Tour & Catherine Cookson Country
Travel through the Tyne tunnel towards the beautiful coastline around Tynemouth for a coastal tour through Cullercoats and Whitley Bay to St. Mary's Island. We return to Tynemouth village to the glorious headland overlooking the piers at the mouth of the River Tyne with views of the ruins of Tynemouth Castle, Priory and a wonderful memorial to Admiral Lord Collingwood the hero of Trafalgar. Located on the headland is the Volunteer Life Brigade Headquarters, the first in the world and now often used as a film location. In our visit we learn about this historic building and organisation. We then have free time in Tynemouth village, with its attractive Front Street, famous for its antique shops. We cross the river to visit the area linked with famous authoress Catherine Cookson, with rich history and proud heritage, from Roman times to the Venerable Bede. We see locations and enjoy stories, from Catherine's life, the little Saxon Church and monastery of St Paul, the home of the Venerable Bede in Jarrow, and the Roman fort of Arbeia.
