Our journey to the Northern tip of the UK begins as we head North of the border and enjoy an overnight stay in the Stirling area
We enjoy a scenic drive to Aberdeen where we join our Northlink overnight ferry to Shetland. Dinner is included on board and twin berth cabins. There are bars and lounges on board for you to relax in as we sail the night away
This morning we arrive in Lerwick, and although still in the UK we are now closer to Scandinavia than Scotland. We enjoy breakfast on board and we meet our local guide for the first of our amazing Shetland Showcase. Today we focus on the Northern Isles of Yell and Unst. We take the short ferry journey to Yell and take the East Coast road toward Cullivoe for a visit to the Old Haa Museum – full of unusual artefacts from the lives of the Islanders. We continue across Yell and a short ferry journey takes us to Unst, with its many beautiful beaches and the Baltasound Hotel, where we enjoy a light lunch. We see Muckle Flugga Isle and the most Northern tip of the UK for fantastic views and then to Skidbladner to see a replica Viking Long Ship. We then head back to Lerwick and the Shetland Hotel where we spend the next two nights.
Today we enjoy a coastal tour of the South and West Mainland, heading towards Sumburgh Head our first visit is probably the best beach on Shetland – St. Ninians, with golden sands, sea bird colonies and cliff scenery. We continue to Jarlsof archeological site – one of Europes largest and most complex sites spanning over 5000 years up to the 1600’s, we included entrance to theCroft House Museum. Following lunch we have a photo stop with the Shetland Ponies in the Tingwall Valley, before arriving in Scalloway, the former Capital of the Shetlands, with its 15th century castle and visit the museum displaying local island exhibits and folklore.
Our ship sail later this evening so we have more exploring to do on the Northern Mainland. Travelling via Voe and Brae to ‘The Drongs’ – a spectacular series of sea stacks, we then visit the Tangwick Haa Museum before enjoying a guided tour of Shetland Jewellery Workshop, see how the gold and silver jewellery is handcrafted using traditional Nordic themes. We head back to Lerwick via Wormadale Viewpoint and Shetland Museum. Our overnight sailing once again includes twin berth cabins, dinner and breakfast
Arriving into Aberdeen this morning we disembark and take the coastal road south passing the sandy St. Cyrus beach at Montrose and visiting the City of Discovery - Dundee with its brand newwaterfront, heading over the Tay bridge into Fife we visit the golf and university town of St. Andrews before arriving at our overnight hotel in the Dunfermline / Edinburgh area
We’ll pop into Edinburgh for a few hours this morning before returning back to the North West for approx. 6pm.
The Shetland Hotel, Lerwick * * *
In a fabulous location just opposite the ferry terminal, and as the name suggests the Waterfront Bar & Restaurant on the 2nd floor offers lovely views. There's also Beltramis a
buzzing Sports Bar on the ground floor of the hotel. The bedrooms are large and spacious and offer TV, tea/coffee making facilities. Whilst the hotel does have a lift - please
note that it doesn't serve all rooms.Back to top
