DAY 2 - 4 At leisure in Valkenburg with two included excursions.
Just a short walk takes you into the centre of town where a visit to the 11th century hilltop castle ruins and entrance to the famous Velvet Cave is included. Wander from the Great Hall to the defence towers, from the dungeon to the old chapel. Underneath the castle remains is the Velvet Cave, the labyrinth of secret passages and escape corridors used by the knights and soldiers of yore. The castle can be reached by lift but due to the historic nature of the ruins, some areas are uneven and not suitable for those with limited mobility.
In the evenings at the hotel enjoy a Jukebox night (choose your favourite music from a free jukebox all night), a Cocktail night (one cocktail per person included) and a live music night.
HERITAGE STEAM & WORLD GARDENS
Steam back in time with a short ride on the heritage South Limburg Steam Railway, known as the Million Line (due to the cost of restoring the track) from Simpelveld to Schin op Geul. It operates on double track preserved lines (as does England's Great Central Railway with which it is twinned). Continue to the unique Mondo Verde World Gardens where you can visit themed gardens from Japan, Morocco, Russia, the Tropics and the Alps to name but a few. Mondo Verde is a park known for its fabulous collection of gardens but it also features a zoo, an amusement park with rides and family attractions. Entrance also includes an 'All You Can Eat' selection of sandwiches, pasta, snacks, soup and a hot drink
Historic Monschau, in the pristine Eifel, is an idyllic town of narrow steep-roofed, romantic cobbled lanes and half-timbered houses and inns clustered along the banks of the River Rur. Largely unchanged for hundreds of years, Monschau, 'the Pearl of the Eifel' is a dreamy place for a stroll. With over 300 buildings listed as monuments, you can't but help be captivated by the Altstadt (Old Town) with its quaint shops, colourful window boxes and tempting cafes.
DAY 5 - Travel back through Holland, Belgium and France to Calais for the return to England arriving back early to mid-evening.Back to top
