Skye - The Misty Isle

Day 1 - To Dumfries - From your chosen joining point your feeder vehicle will take you to the designated interchange point where your holiday begins. After joining your holiday coach, travel north with suitable stops for lunch and refreshments. Arrive at your overnight hotel, 3* Holiday Inn Hotel in Dumfries in time for your evening meal. DBB

Day 2 - A Day of Scottish Delights - Continue north via the motorway for a stop at the iconic Falkirk Wheel, the world's only rotating boatlift which connects the Forth & Clyde and Union canals. It was constructed to replace a series of 19th century lock gates and re-established coast-to-coast navigation of the canals. Please ask you driver about an optional boat trip on this extraordinary piece of engineering (details and price available locally). Then it's on through the Trossachs (with a hairy coo stop!) before driving across the wilderness of Rannoch Moor, a vast stretch of land composed of peat bogs, small lochs, streams and rocky outcrops. The mood of this somewhat other-worldly landscape varies with the vagaries of the Scottish weather. You then descend into the one of the most beautiful places in Scotland, Glencoe, where the deep valley and towering mountains were carved out centuries ago by icy glaciers and volcanic explosions. Check into your overnight hotel, 3* Ballachulish Hotel at the foot of Glencoe. The lochside setting offers magnificent views over Loch Linnhe and the hills of Glencoe. Day 3 - Fort William to Skye - After breakfast, it's a short transfer along the shores of Loch Linnhe to Fort William. Enjoy some free time to explore this popular town with its enviable setting on the loch shores amid magnificent mountain scenery. Alternatively, you may like to join the optional excursion (weather permitting) to the Nevis Range Mountain Gondola, the only one of its kind in Britain, reaching a height of 650m. It is built on the north face of Aonach Mòr, the 8th highest mountain in Britain from where you have stunning views of Ben Nevis (details and price available from your driver locally). Then follow the Road to the Isles by way of Glenfinnan, the historical site where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the standard in 1745 (your driver will make a stop if possible). Enjoy the stunning views of the loch and mountains and, especially for 'Harry Potter' fans, the Glenfinnan viaduct. Continue to Mallaig for the panoramic afternoon crossing to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Check into the 3* Dunollie Hotel in Broadford for 3 nights DBB

Day 4 - Skye Discovery Day - (may operate with a local coach). A full day to explore the magical Misty Isle with a local guide and capture the very essence of this lovely island. Head to the north of Skye to Portree, the main town and a bustling port and cultural centre. Set around its natural harbour and fringed by high ground and cliffs, the town is a popular destination, and the harbour continues to be used by local fishing boats as well as pleasure craft. There will be a photo stop for a view of the famous Old Man of Storr, a 55-metre-high pinnacle of basalt rock which is all that remains of a 2,800-million-year-old volcanic plug. Next stop is the Lealt Falls which plunge 90 metres down a narrow, tree-lined gorge into the Sound of Raasay. A recently constructed viewing platform gives some breathtaking views of the upper falls. Last stop of the day is an included entrance to the Skye Museum of Island Life where you will step back in time to an old Highland village. The museum consists of several traditional thatched cottages which offer a unique experience and a true insight into island life and that of crofters and their families 100 years ago.  It's also just a short stroll to Kilmuir Cemetery where you can view the burial place of Flora MacDonald. Return to the hotel for dinner this evening

Day 5 - Broadford & Eilean Donan Castle - A relaxed morning to enjoy the village of Broadford which stretches for a mile and a half around the bay. The Skye Market Square, next to the Dunollie Hotel boasts several off-beat shops and more practically, Broadford is home to a large supermarket, post office and bank. This afternoon, join the coach for an included visit to the most recognisable castle in Scotland, Eilean Donan. The journey takes you over the Skye road bridge through Kyle of Lochalsh to the famous 13th century castle for a guided tour. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle has gained such iconic status. NB the design and layout of the castle feature uneven steps, narrow stairways, corridors and the different floor levels within the castle walls. The Visitor Centre, café and gift shop are fully accessible. Return to the hotel for dinner this evening

Day 6 - To Loch Ness & Beyond - Retrace your steps this morning across the Skye road bridge as you leave the Misty Isle behind you and travel via lochs and glens to Fort Augustus, the historic and scenic hamlet at the southernmost tip of Loch Ness. Lying on the impressive 60 mile long Caledonian Canal, halfway between Inverness and Fort William, Fort Augustus offers spectacular views down Loch Ness and you may like to join an option cruise on beautiful Loch Ness which contains more water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined (details and price available locally from your driver). Continue onwards by way of Loch Laggan - this is Monarch of the Glen Country and you should catch a glimpse of Ardverikie House which featured as the fictional Glenbogle Estate. Onto vibrant Pitlochry with its timeless Victorian ambiance before continuing to your final overnight stop in central Stirling at 3* Golden Lion Hotel. The location is ideal to make the most of your last night in Scotland by stepping out this evening for a stroll through this great historic city. DBB

Day 7 - Homeward bound - After breakfast, head back through Northern England, with ample stops for coffee and refreshments. Continue back to the local joining points via the fast motorway network arriving back mid/late evening.
