Erl Passion Play & Tyrolean Travels
There’s no need to wait until 2020 to see a traditional passion play when 2019 (May – October) sees the return of the Erl Passion Play which takes place every 6 years in a picturesque, little Tyrolean village. The Erl Passion Play has a long and proud history which even pre-dates its more famous counterpart in Oberammergau, making it the oldest amongst the German-speaking countries.
Erl is much less commercialised but no less dramatically moving and the village is fully immersed with over 600 of its residents appearing on stage. The play takes place in the purpose-built (non-heated) playhouse with a unique architecture and amazing acoustics. The performance is in German with English explanations in subtitles and the especially composed music is performed live by the choir and orchestra.
Combine this unique experience with the very essence of all things Alpine Austrian – crystal clear lakes, snowy mountain peaks, chocolate box villages and impossibly cute chalets bedecked with colourful flowers, not to mention Alpine boats, trains, funiculars and cable car – for a panoramic tour of Tyrolean highlights.
