In the words of Goethe, ‘Make your Way to Speyer’, a delightful town on the Rhine, scarcely damaged in WWII, with a compact centre easy to explore on foot. Speyer’s crowning glory is the magnificent landmark 11th Kaiserdom cathedral, the largest Romanesque structure in Germany and the greatest building of the medieval German empire. Discover the charming streets and long history of the town with a guided walking tour with a local guide and a warming Glühwein along the way. Speyer’s atmospheric Christmas market takes place in the heart of the picturesque old town.
Compact Heidelberg packs a punch when it comes to the beautiful and historical Christmas market. The energetic may like to visit the majestic ‘half-ruined’ hilltop castle (entrance or funicular railway ride not included) for stunning views across the town and the River Neckar.
