Black Forest Winter Wonderland
With snow covered fir trees, wide plains of glistening white, deep, dark woodlands and glistening lakes, this varied corner of south-west Germany, the Black Forest is as delicious as its famous chocolate cherry gateau – a pure winter wonderland! Stretching from the spa town of Baden-Baden down to the Swiss border, The Black Forest is just made for touring. On this brand new winter holiday, you can expect scenic drives through picturesque landscape, wonderful waterfalls and pretty medieval towns. And let’s not forget the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte!
Please note that this holiday involves a medium amount of easy walking and you should come prepared with warm outdoor clothing and sturdy, non-slip waterproof shoes / boots.
PLEASE NOTE: Price is per person and based on two people sharing a twin/double room. Single room supplements and upgrades are not included.
DAY 1 - From your chosen joining point your feeder vehicle will take you to the designated interchange point where your holiday begins. After joining your holiday coach, you will travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais. Then continue to Germany to your overnight hotel (late arrival). Bed & breakfast.
DAY 2 - After breakfast you will have the opportunity to join an optional cruise on the Rhine (subject to seasonal timetables cost €15 pp) from the quaint riverside town of Boppard to St Goar taking in the wonderful scenery of the middle Rhine Gorge. Continue your journey to the Black Forest and the village of Rickenbach for your 5-night stay with a welcome drink on arrival. Your stay begins with a gentle guided torch-lit walk in the countryside around the hotel and the village with for a warming mulled wine back at the hotel (NB may take place on another evening). Dinner, bed and breakfast.
DAY 3 - DAY 6 - You will have four full days to explore this beautiful region with a full programme of excursions. Dinner, bed and breakfast.

Freiburg – ‘Capital of the Black Forest’
Visit the lively university town of Freiburg on the western edge of the Southern Black Forest at the foot of its wooded slopes. The included sightseeing tour with a local English speaking guide will show the sights of the beautifully restored medieval Old Town which is criss-crossed with pretty little brooks and canals. There will also be time to explore the cobbled lanes, intriguing architecture and ornate Minster with its 116m tall tower before heading back to the hotel.
Cuckoo Clocks & Waterfalls
Enjoy a scenic drive through the splendid countryside to the picturesque resort of Titisee, known for its crystal clear lake of the same name. The head further north into the heart of the Black Forest and the charming town of Triberg, home to Germany’s highest waterfalls (163m drop). Entrance to the falls is included with the lower section accessible during the winter. Please note paths are cleared and gritted but may be slippery so strong, waterproof shoes are recommendable. Triberg is also famous for its tradition of wood carvers and clock makers and a stop will be made at the world’s largest cuckoo clock in nearby Schonach (entrance not included – approx. €3).
Horse & Carriage ride with Black Forest Gateau
A short drive today to the Schluchsee, the region’s largest lake and a haven for nature lovers and walkers before heading to Rothaus-Grafenhausen. Wrap up warm to embark on a romantic horse and carriage ride through the wintery Black Forest before enjoying a coffee and slice of that famous gateau! (NB depending on numbers the carriage ride may take place after the coffee and cake). Head back to the hotel for time at leisure.
A Day out in Switzerland (Don’t forget your passport!) - €25 pp
Head east today across the border into Switzerland to the quaint, medieval town of Schaffhausen. Considered one of the prettiest towns in Switzerland, there will be time to explore the pedestrian-only old town with its narrow streets and ornate frescos and facades which grace the pastel-coloured houses. Continue via the magnificent Rhine Falls to historic Stein am Rhein, situated at the point where Lake Constance becomes the River Rhine. It is famous for its well preserved, half-timbered medieval houses with their painted facades which are clustered around the Town Hall Square in the Old Town. The impressive Hohenklingen Castle overlooks the town from its hilltop location.
DAY 7 - Today it’s Auf Wiedersehen to the Black Forest as you drive north with a stop in the elegant spa town of Baden Baden, a timeless ‘grande dame’ full of old-world luxury, thermal baths and stately colonnades. Continue to your overnight stop in France. Bed and breakfast.
DAY 8 - Today after an early breakfast travel back through France to Calais for the return crossing to England.Back to top
