A great value Spring getaway
DAY 1 - After joining your holiday coach, head off through the Cotswolds AONB to lovely Stow-on-the-Wold, at nearly 800ft, the highest town in the Cotswolds, with its impressive large Market Square as well as the enchanting door of St Edwards Church, locked between two trees and rumoured to be the inspiration of JRR Tolkien's 'Doors of Durin' in Lord of the Rings. Onto 4* DoubleTree by Hilton Swindon to check in for your 3-night stay with porterage and a welcome drink on arrival. DBB (with buffet dinner each evening).DAY 2 - Wiltshire Wonders - After breakfast today, head to Stonehenge. Built around the same time as the Great Pyramid in Egypt, 4,500 years ago, the construction of one of the world's most architecturally sophisticated, prehistoric monuments remains a marvel of ancient ingenuity. Immerse yourself in Stonehenge's story at the state-of-the-art visitor centre (with café and toilet facilities), featuring a 360-degree exhibition, over 250 artifacts and a forensic reconstructed face of a 5,500-year-old man. Just outside the Visitor Centre you can visit the reconstructed Neolithic dwellings where Stonehenge's builders would have lived. A walk around the Stone Circle is the centrepiece of the visit - a shuttle bus service takes you from the Visitor Centre to the stones and back. NB the path around the stones is accessible (weather dependent) and the surrounding landscape is uneven in places.
Later head off to Devises, a historic market town with a colourful medieval past and a wealth of history and architectural heritage with more than 500 listed buildings. Its large Market Place is at the heart of the town and there is a wide range of traditional independent shops. Time at leisure to explore as well as an included entrance to the excellent Wiltshire Museum which tells 500,000 years of Wiltshire's stories. Award-winning displays feature spectacular treasures dating back to the time of Stonehenge and worn by people who worshiped inside the stone circle. Then it's back to the present day as you return to the hotel to freshen up for dinner this evening.
DAY 3 - A Day Out in Bath - It's not far to the Georgian City of Bath with its many historical treasures, monuments and beautiful architecture dating back to Roman times. Explore this magnificent city with its many attractions from the Abbey to the Roman Baths (entrances not included / some attraction may require pre-booking) and view the famous Pulteney Bridge or just relax on the banks of the River Avon. Bath's extraordinary array of architectural treasure has earned the whole city UNESCO World Heritage status, and it is, of course, also home to many of the locations and scenes of the popular Netflix production 'Bridgerton' and its portrayal of Regency England. Enjoy time at leisure and your driver may be able to offer an optional city sightseeing tour (details locally)
DAY 4 - After breakfast, depart the hotel to return home with a stop in Oxford, a wonderful place to visit and home to magnificent architecture and history, famous literary figures and unique traditions. Oxford's prestigious university with its honey-coloured colleges is the city's defining feature, but you also find great shops and plenty of interesting places for a refreshment stop before continuing to interchange and onward to your home towns.
